"T" in front of a man/boy's name

Featured Replies

What does it mean when someone puts a "T" in front of a man/boy's name???

calling someone "T-Nan" for example ... ?

Thanks

Are you possible mishearing? If it is p-Nan (say) then it's pee-Nan which is elder sibling Nan.

where did you get that idea from ?

Which region do you live? Is it a Chinese origin family?

Found this:

http://www.thai-language.com/id/144657#def2

Chinese loanword for younger brother.

I myself can't remember having heard that.

Usually it's a sign of respect to your elders, B Noi , B Jum, it depends on the age of the person who you are talking to.

Yes .. I am sure about the "T" ...

I am asking about something I have seen written down

T-Nan ... written down ...

I was thinking it was a honorific given to young men studying for the Monk-hood?

thank you for the link

Maybe it stand for transgender

Another possibility would be that is short for ท่าน (thaan falling tone). That is a very polite form of you or he which is used for people like ministers, ambassadors etc.

My family origins are China and the family maintains many Chinese customs, such as call young male cousins Tee-Nickname. An examples:

Tee-Santi who is a cousin to my grandchildren. Many Thai families of Chinese origin use this term to designate the position in the family.

  • 2 weeks later...

Its short for Than, a title given to monks
