Any help greatly appreciated

My situation is this

I am currently on a tourist visa which expires on 13th December. My partner is Thai (we are not married but live together) and our first child was born 3 weeks ago. I am on the childs birth certificate but we have not been to court yet to legitimise my paternity. In terms of money in the bank Ive just put money in today to increase the balance to 500k.

The questions that I have based on my circumstances above are

1) Am I ok to apply for a visa to look after my daughter (the 500k wont have been in the bank for 2 full months before I apply) and if so

2) What documents I would need to bring with me to the Thai Embassy

3) Which would be the best embassy to apply through (Laos?)

4) How long the visa would be for and how long it can be extended for.

If anyone has any experience or knowledge in this area your insight would be greatly appreciated

The money in the bank requirement to get a one year extension of stay based upon being the parent of a Thai is 400k baht not 500k. You will not be able to apply for the extension until you legitimize your parenthood at the court.

You can get a single entry non-o visa with no financial proof in Vientiane, Savannakhet or Penang. You will need your child's birth certificate plus a copy and a copy of their house book registry. You will get a 90 day entry from the visa.

If your family went with you to Savannakhet you could get a multiple entry non-o visa with no financial. proof. You can also get a multiple entry non-o in Penang by showing your bank book the money just has to be in the bank there is no 2 month requirement. A multiple entry visa allows unlimited 90 day entries for a year.

You can also apply for a 60 day extension to visit your child at an immigration office with any type of entry.

  1. The money doesn't have to be in an account for 2 months when applying for a visa OR an extension of stay based on visiting a child.

Birth certificate original and copy. Copy of house book.

Your best option is to get a single entry non 'O' available at either Vientiane or Savannakhet.

That will give you 90 days on entry. Within the last 30 days of that stay you can apply for a 1 year extension of stay (as long as you've become the legal father).

I just did something similar .

I tried to get a Non O based on having a child here and all I had was a his birth certificate

I got refused .

Unmarried Fathers have no rights in Thailand .

You may have better luck if you take your gf along with you or at least her ID card and house book .

But I was told :"No marriage , no Visa"

If applying for a single entry in Laos they don't usually need you to be the legal father. Only multiple entry.

Thanks guys that puts my mind at rest a lot.

Please excuse the ignorance but if I got a single entry non o from Laos and then before it expired had the legitamacy document from the court and extended it to 1 year could I still buy a re entry permit and leave the country within that time without losing the visa?

Visas are never extended !

It is the "permitted stay" which the visa allowed which can be extended.

You could obtain a re entry permit for the single entry visa .

If you secure an extension of stay you can also buy a re entry permit based on the extension.

Note.

A re-entry permit is only valid during a permitted period of stay. It adds no additional days/time.

Yes.

  • You can buy a re-entry permit as soon as the 1 year extension has been granted.
  • You can buy re-entry permits at a later date from immigration offices, airpots and some land borders.
  • Single entry permit is 1,000 baht.
  • Multi entry permit is 3,800 baht.
