Retirement: Can anyone help on two subjects that's been bugging me

Featured Replies

I have been living in Thailand for 5 years and once every year I have to travel from Koh Samui to Bangkok to get a Stat Declaration of my pension for my retirement papers, the idea is for the embassy to witness my signature ONLY. It’s a pain in the ass and a long way to travel to do it, two flights and a night in a place I dont want to be.

My question is why can’t a Thai Lawyer do the same if I have the forms, does anyone know if that is possible?

Secondly does anyone know if a Foreign Currency Account in a full term deposit with the Bangkok Bank or any other bank in Thailand is acceptable to immigration when you have to show that you have 800,000 Baht when applying?

Thank you if you can help, these thoughts have been paining me for ages.

Off-topic post removed. The OP did not mention his nationality and it would be pointless to fill this topic with information about how each of the over 100 embassies in Thailand handle this matter.

It is not acceptable to immigration. Ask your embassy if they will do it by mail.

Some immigration offices accept it, some don't. Check with you local immigration office if they accept it.

You can go to a consular outreach, or, if you like, deposit 800,000 in a Thai bank. Not having the use of the money might be worth it, considering the inconveniencenof getting the income affidavit. I have been on ThaiVisa for quite a while but have never heard of anyone being able to use money in a different currency not deposited in a Thai Bank; however, time deposits (in baht and in a Thai Bank) have worked for some people.

I'm afraid there is no getting around whatever procedure your Embassy lays down for a statement of Pension Income.

Fixed term deposit accounts are accepted by Immigration according to Police Orders, because funds are readily accessible if required, you just loose interest withdrawing early. The stipulation is 'funds' deposited in a Thai bank.

If you have the option, why not try using the funds in the bank method first. If they refuse because the account is in foreign currency, you still have time to get the Pension Income letter from your Embassy.

Again some removed.

OP please tell us your nationality.

Are you aware income letters are accepted that are up to 6 months old. Perhaps you can schedule your trip for the stat declaration at a more convenient time.

Income letters only 1 month where I go. Chiang Khan Loei.

I have taken the B800k deposit in Thai bank route.

Easy!

800k Baht is not a lot of money so I have to guess.... there is nothing wrong with keeping money in baht, right now it is again way undervalued. it historically ran about 20 to the US dollar and although Thailand has it's negatives... it is also a country able to exist at a much lower (sustainable) level of consumption which is a huge competitive advantage... it really is, it balances so, even in 2015. so what I'm saying is, it just doesn't make sense to go to any great length to keep from putting some money into a regular bank account and be done with it. none of the 1 year visas are easy as retirement based on 800k. it's like doing a 90 letter.

p.s. if you American, pray tell the payroll data keeps getting better because if the US ever hits an "air pocket" with interbank rates still near zero the reaction in fx could be very very quick and brutal. the US will only have the money printing part to do more QE with, and you can bet for sure they won't just sit around at all and do nothing. that's a very real danger so having baht or something other than dollars and Euros is not a bad thing at all.
