Six new green bean varieties developed to help farmers

LAMPANG, 9 November 2015 (NNT) – Six new varieties of green beans have been developed by Kasetsart University and distributed to farmers as an alternative to rice growing when water scarcity remains an ongoing issue.

The new varieties were created by Professor Dr. Peerasak Sriniwate, a researcher from Kasetsart University’s Department of Agriculture. The research was funded by the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA).

Each variety has been given a genetic code name, ‘KUML’. They were developed from high quality beans found in various places around the world. They are also said to be resistant to plant diseases and will produce more seed.

Science and Technology Minister Dr. Pichet Durongkaveroj visited a bean plot at Rajamangkala University of Technology Lanna Lampang where these beans were first grown, in order to observe their growth.

The NSTDA and the Department of Agricultural Extension will raise awareness of the new bean varieties and promote their farming via an MRCF system which they hope will turn at least 7,000 rai of land across Thailand into bean plantations.
