Myanmar's Ruling Party Admits Election Defeat

YANGON:-- The chairman of Myanmar's ruling party has conceded defeat in the country's first free general election in 25 years.
The leader of the Union Solidarity and Development Party, Htay Oo, told Reuters: "We do accept the results without any reservations."
His comments, along with initial reports from counting stations around the country, would appear to support opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi's comments earlier in which she hinted at a victory for her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD).
An NLD spokesman said the party had secured more than 80% of the votes counted so far in densely populated central regions and more than 65% in the states of Mon and Kayin outside the central area.

OK then, now the rubber hits the road and we will see what changes will be made. whistling.gif

25% still guaranteed to the military and no leadership position for Aung San Suu Kyi. So it can at best be a parson's egg.

Pedant's corner - 'Curate's Egg'.

actually it would depend on where you came from or heard it first - but you seem unaware of the variations

I'm still trying to unpack what this means for Myanmar.

it remains to be seen.....but I doubt if it will be too dramatic. It would be nice to see minorities at peace with the military and the refugee situation addressed and citizenship for the Rohingya.

It would be nice to see wildlife trafficking policed better.

On a personal view it would be nice to be able to take my car into the country

One a common sense view - it would be nice to see them revert to driving on the left.

Not sure if this is good for the country. She is only popular because of her father who was a national hero and because of the fact that she won the nobel price. Peoples expectations in Myanmar will no raise dramatic and its 100% clear that not all can be fulfilled. Changes and improvement on living standards for most of Myanmar citizens will take decades and the only one who at this moment benefit from it is the political elite of the NLD despite the fact that the real power in this country ( the monkhood and NOT the military ) will stay in power which is actually the most bad news for the people. Myanmar will be nor ruled by people it will be ruled by religion and fortunetellers, so nothing will change.

As of today only Thailand has no elected government in the ASEAN community.

So it is now the Hub of the Unelected.

More house arrest for Aung Yu suk ???

It really doesn't matter as the "money" still runs the country, just like every other country in ASEAN! One day the people will get a voice, that will be a day to celebrate!!thumbsup.gifclap2.gifclap2.gifwai.gif

this article probably offers as good a summation as any....

"Myanmar’s military leaders have, constitutionally, blocked any possibility of “the Woman” with her two “impure-blooded sons” and “foreign privileges” assuming the presidency,"

rather depressing.....

All good

You will be able to remenise with the current Thai government in around a year
