I wonder what the Indian-based news reports mean by Thai "girls" in this case? Using the word "girls" normally would connote under-age, but I doubt that's the case here, though the article doesn't appear to say.

Really, how about the police also arrest those who force young indian girls into sex slaves, and men who rape women, and underage children..

Not to mention forced marriage and acid attacks.

It surprises me that Thai girls even go to India.

I read that Indians like a substantial discount & share a lady.

When I lived in India our local Rotary club has a presentation from a female rights activist.

Very interesting presentation in which she claimed India has by far the most prostitutes in the world.

I never saw prostitution or signs of prostitution overtly. All very discreet, not in your face. But I was in the conservative south. However, one expat member of our business club, a fairly young guy used to order them by the pair apparently.

I visited a few brothels in Bombay, while living there. But, the entire scene was quite like in the US. Very underground, and hidden from view. In the US, there are far more prostitutes and women involved in the sex industry than in Thailand. This is a well documented fact. But, nobody believes it, as it is so far underground. I have no idea how large the industry is in India. It does exist. But, don't know to what extent. It is well hidden, like in the US, although in the US the strip clubs and quite visible, and there are thousands of massage parlors. But it takes a bit of detective work to determine which ones are actually brothels. Also, many chiropractic offices, acupuncture clinics, etc, are really brothels in disguise. And the escort industry is massive. One can only guess the number. There are hundreds of thousands that work in the porn industry, and as strippers, who might not classify themselves as hookers.

Stephanie Chen, former Writer-Producer for CNN, stated in her Aug. 28, 2009 CNN.com article titled "'John Schools' Try to Change Attitudes about Paid Sex": "No comprehensive effort has been made to track the numbers, but experts estimate 1 million to 2 million prostitutes work in the United States. The FBI's 2007 Uniform Crime Report lists about 78,000 arrests for prostitution and commercialized vice, but experts say those numbers are extremely conservative because many sex workers and johns aren't caught."
not sure how accurate these numbers are. The Thailand numbers seem quite low. My guess is closer to 700,000.
  1. China5 Million
  2. India3 Million
  3. United States1 Million
  4. Philippines800,000
  5. Mexico500,000
  6. Germany400,000
  7. Brazil250,000 children
  8. Thailand250,000

Another fascinating and very detailed study of eight major US cities concludes the figure is probably closer to 2 million prostitutes in the US. That sounds closer to reality to me.

To be honest, I do feel a little bad for these women because they come from poor (and sometimes desperately poor) backgrounds, they're not hurting anyone, they're meeting a clear 'need', and they're not taking jobs from locals.

Those Thai girls in India were surely in competition with locals.

On a serious note I was told by an ex that Thais generally are not keen on Indians. Once I suggested Indian restaurant to her. She flipped. She recalled working in a major hotel in bkk. Some Indian customers wouldn't use the toilet and proceed to do a no2 on the floor and ask the maid to clean it. She had developed a bad rapport with Indians. A sentiment echoed by other Thai women I have encountered. Imagine if that was the case. Yuk.

It's called a German doormat, quite common actually.
