Over 1,000 garment workers descended on the Labor Ministry headquarters yesterday calling for help in getting their jobs back after striking for over half a month and being fired on Tuesday.

Pav Sina, president of the Collective Union of Movement of Workers (CUMW), said that about 1,800 workers were fired from Hong Sen Textile (Cambodia) Company and told to apply again if they wanted their jobs back.

Mr. Sina said they went on strike for $12 per month for transportation and 50 cents per day for lunch.

The owners of the Hong Sen Textile (Cambodia) Company yesterday refused to reinstate garment workers they fired after they went on strike for more benefits unless they reapplied for new jobs.

Nhoem Sros, a 35-year-old garment worker who joined the nearly two hour closed-door meeting with government officials and company representatives, said that the workers will continue to protest until they are reinstated. “The company agreed to give us $8 per month for transportation and $0.25 per day for lunch, and we agreed to this deal. But the company did not agree to reinstate us,” she said.

Deputy secretary-general of the committee for the resolution of strike Tes Rukhaphal said that about 1,000 workers accepted the initial deal and agreed to go back to work as new employees. More than 700 workers are holding out for their old positions at the factory.
