Spared from Chopping Block, TCDC Welcomes Audit

BANGKOK — A government-supported center promoting creative economic activity said it welcomes a review of its operations after a move to dissolve it was placed on hold for a three-month assessment.

Thailand’s creative community was shaken Monday by news the military government would shut down the Thailand Creative and Design Center along with other institutions operating under an agency established in 2004 to develop the creative sector as part of a restructuring of the Thai economy following the 1997 economic crisis.

At Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha punted on a decision to shutter the Office of Knowledge Management and Development, or OKMD, and instead announced an audit of spending by all public organizations, including those operating under OKMD’s purview.

Been to the TCDC a few times. If there is one thing that should be closed, it's this place. Very limited resources. Not nearly enough to justify continued budgetary expense.

TCDC has had great exhibitions in the past. Those were stopped after the coup. However, slowly starting again though. Also, a customer of ours

Did not think self-inrerest and econmic gain for a member was allowed on this forum.

Surely, this means at least a suspension or a ban?.

TCDC is largely self-supporting by charging 3500 THB/year for membership.....perhaps the problem has been that TCDC was originally instituted by the evil Thaksin. many Thai students use this facility-i am a current member and as an ex- professional building designer and computer scientist can compare its scope to the Stanford U. library (Palo Alto, CA USA)

TCDC is a valuable resource in that it holds probably the largest collection of professional books and articles on design in existence...well over 30,000 books-95% in English-in the disciplines and practical applications of art, architecture, construction techniques, interior design, etc....it is a magnificent library and those who oppose it are stupid, inbred barbarians.
