nespresso had all the patents on the capsule system so for some years they had a monopoly not anymore, anybody can make them now and market them for nespresso machines. Here in the netherlands i can get a dozen or more none of them are a patch on the nespresso ristretto that i used for a few years

exept Albert Heins exellent range ristretto and the cheapest of all Lidls ristreeto both a good alternative to nespresso capsuls.a french press is not a good alternative to capsuls its a totally different beast.For the OP capsuls and cheap do not go together pads maybe
