BANGKOK: -- ACTOR TRIDSADEE Sahawong remained in critical condition yesterday following complications related to dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF).

The Ramathibodi Hospital announced that the actor, 37, was still receiving treatment in its critical care unit.

He was admitted to the hospital on Monday after developing severe symptoms of the DHF and serious complications.

"He is still on the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation," the hospital said in a statement.

This treatment provides cardiac and respiratory support to people whose heart and lungs are unable to provide an adequate amount of gas exchange to sustain life.

Tridsadee also suffered renal failure and infection-associated hemophagocytics syndrome (a life-threatening disease involving severe hyper-inflammation).

"He has had hemothorax [the presence of blood in the pleural space] too," the hospital added.

However, the hospital said the actor's blood pH was now normal and so were his brain functions.

"His liver also functions better," it said.

Tridsadee's condition has raised public awareness about the dangers of DHF. This year, the disease has affected more than 100,000 people and caused more than 100 deaths.

Photos taken of Tridsadee during this treatment that circulated on social media has led to calls to protect patients' rights.

The National Health Act bans the distribution of patient information. Offenders face up to six months in jail and/or a maximum fine of Bt10,000.

Tridsadee is not the first celebrity to have treatment photos go viral on social media.

Dr Nawanan Theera-Ampornpunt, a lecturer at Mahidol University's Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, said the photos of Tridsadee were not taken at Ramathibodi Hospital.

"Taking pictures of patients is strictly prohibited at Ramathibodi Hospital," he said.

He added that he was now planning to draw up guidelines for medical workers regarding the use of social media where patients were concerned.

Nawanan said that medical workers also needed to be careful about discussing a patient's condition via social media as the information could be leaked.

"Users of such media must be aware of the risk of hacking," he said.

When I was in hospital I got xrayed by one of the staff who pulled out a Samsung galaxy phone and sent the xrays to the doctor who reviewed them on his iPhone via the line application....

Very amusing to see them using social media sharing for convenience but in my case privacy was not an issue so I didn't care what they used ...

Same as the government (yingluck) release statements via personal Facebook pages...

I suppose it gets the job done but hardly reeks of professionalism.... :)

I have no idea who posted pictures of the actor this time but it seems that in so many instances it's done by family and so called friends, who might just might apologise later.

In situations where it involves staff members, people who have access by virtue of employment etc they should be subject to dismissal, at least.

Was action ever taken against the cop who posted photos of the bodies on Koh Tau ? I think i can guess the answer.

Nor was any action taken against the nurses who posted the V sign selfies with the body of someone killed in the South...other than criticism

Pfffft. Thais display every bit of gore, photos of IDs with sensitive data and whatever yellow press <deleted> they can every day in the internet. Part of Thainess.

It's amazing what Photoshop or a course of skin whitening can do for a good 'ole Buriram guy.

Part of Thainess. So you're saying the photos from Abu Ghraib (and many other examples) were taken and disseminated by Thais?

There is no such thing as medical privacy in Thailand......I hope when my time comes, my family doesn't see pics of my dead body on Facebook.

More importantly you should hope it doesn't get reported on TV where it will immediately be used for speculation and general entertainment amongst the conspiracy & ghoulish faction of the farang "community."

If it would be some no-name and he was mangled by a car, no one would give two hot sh1ts about pictures.

But here it is a Hi-So "superstar" actor and everybody gets their knickers twisted.

Mind you: I think both is wrong!

Because they are scared of the backlash from other muslims. It would probably be used as an excuse to murder someone else.

Jade Goody called a muslim Big Brother (a worthless voyeurism TV show in the UK) contestant 'Shilpa Poppadom' and they had riots on the streets of India.

Shilpa Shetty is a Hindu.

That's why it was Hindus in India making a noise,

It just had to be you, didn't it?

At least perhaps people might start putting a bit of attention to the dangers of dengue. A vague hope could be that people will now consider how to eliminate breeding areas for the mosquitoes, but I guess not. This story and lessons (not) learned will be forgotten middle of next week.
