vlc add subtitle file, should be basic, but doesn't work

I've got vlc 2.2.1 and I went to add a subtitle to what I was watching and added the .srt file to movie, yet no subtitles appear. It should be straight forward by going to menu, subtitle, add subtitle file, then clicking on the file and all should be done. However, no luck. BTW the movie is for "Ronaldo" where he is speaking in English, Portuguese, and Spanish.

subtitle file name has to match name of video file.

Only if you want the subtitles to be displayed automatically. If selecting the subtitle track manually like described by the OP, the name of video and sub title file don't need to match.

Sorry OP, I don't know why it doesn't work for you, what you have described doing should work. Maybe the subtitle file is corrupted, have you opened it in Notepad and checked if it looks OK?

Jubler is the program I use to check/time shift any less than perfect subtitle files... and you may just have a rubbish srt file.

Opensubtitles at www.opensubtitles.org is my first port of call for srt files - so have a search in there.

It's very unlikely to be a problem with VLC, to be honest.

Eventually download the free program moviesubtitler.exe

I had to use it when subtitles were added by VLC and visible on my PC...but when I transfered the video file to and external USB hard disk it did not show after plugging it in a USB port of my television set....after using moviesubtitler I could see the subtitles in my television.
