PM addresses the nation of what he has done

BANGKOK: Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha last night told the people of what his government was doing in international stage and how he was concerned about the drought situation this coming planting season and his roadmap to democracy.

He also raised the plight of people with disabilities to the attention of all people saying they still could contribute much to the society. He also stressed the need to improve Khlong Saen Saep canal, the country’s longest 72 kilometre long man-made and 170-year-old canal for utmost utilisation and therefore eviction of canal squatters is necessary.

In his nationwide address to the people during the weekly “Returning Happiness to the People” last night, Gen Prayut began his speech by saying that as the “National Day for Persons with Disabilities” would fall on the second Saturday of November (Nov 14), he would like to remind everyone in this society that they are still a valuable resource if they are given good medical care, education, occupational promotion and given social opportunities with no discrimination.

He said these people would be able to improve themselves and contribute to the society.

He honoured a group of disabled athletes who will take part in the ASEAN Para Games, to be held in Singapore between Dec 3 and Dec 9, 2015 and wished them good luck and success.

He encouraged the people to purchase Kaew Kallaya flowers which represents the persons with disabilities. The name of this artificial flower was bestowed by HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana.

On the severity of drought this coming planting season, he warned again of insufficient water for second crop farming and called on cooperation from farmers to not grow second rice crops in irrigation areas as water will be reserved for household consumption.

As propaganda was still waged by ill-intentioned group of people trying to give false information and distorted facts to farmers, the prime minister called on farmers to listen with caution and not to fall prey to this certain group of people.

On international stage, Gen Prayut said his government is working to build understanding and confidence among foreign countries, the NNT reported.

He said he had instructed ambassadors and consulate-generals in 98 countries to continue to create confidence in the international community regarding Thailand’s political situation.

Thailand will definitely have elections within 17 or 18 months and diplomats must keep tabs on the country’s development in order to keep the international community informed, the prime minister said.

As the Bangkok Post reported, they were also told to help promote the government’s economic policies abroad, including securing overseas know-how to create greater opportunities for Thai firms.

The government has come up with several urgent measures to help low-income earners, farmers and SMEs as well as other short- and long-term measures to strengthen the economy, he told them.

Besides, he said the government is now improving trade and investment incentives through Board of Investment measures in cooperation with industrial sectors, such as agriculture and the automobile industry.

The incentives will be offered to investment in special economic zones to create a favourable investment environment.

On the Khlong Saen Saep canal project, he said the facelift project must be accomplished in two years time.

He said improvement of the canal will be seen in quality of water, garbage disposal, landscape, boat travel safety, improvement of boat piers, and CCTV navigation along the canal, and significantly social awareness of canal residents and travellers on boats.

Canal residents must help to make their backyards and front doors beautiful so that the canal could become a new tourist attraction.

Why don't you start by requiring all government buildings and schools to have proper access for disabled persons?

The delay will give the Thais the opportunity to consult with the head of the NLD in democratic Burma/Myanmar and see what she thinks about holding elections and her subsequent landslide victory in a militarily controlled environment. Thein Sein has been pragmatic about the whole thing, but the military still maintain 25% of the parliamentary seats I believe.

The president of Myanmar, in all but name, Aung San Suu Kyi, may have some advice for the Thai generals.

She may be unable to assume the Presidential mantle due to circumstances beyond her control, but she will certainly know what her party will need to do to leave Thailand choking on their dust.

Being The Lady that she is, she will wave and wai the Thai generals as her country speeds past in future development.

Of course, the above is merely my imagination running wild..

The headline reads “PM addresses the nation of what he has done”, yet the contents of the article from the broadcaster we can trust does not include too many noteworthy milestones other than Thailand will definitely have elections within 17 or 18 months (unless this has been misinterpreted in translation)!

On the happy side, credit is due to the PM for raising the plight of people with disabilities, and noting they still could contribute much to society. Also good of him to acknowledge the disabled athletes who will take part in the ASEAN Para Games next month.

Unfortunately, that’s about all I can see for people to be happy about, as the rest of the report is nothing more than standard propaganda and the usual rhetoric about ill-intentioned people trying to give false information and distorted facts (this time, about the drought).

While he expressed his concern about the drought situation, the junta has done far too little to mitigate against its effects throughout this year. For example, there is still no water restrictions for Bangkok and other tourist centres, or for industry.

He also continues to push the ‘need’ to improve Khlong Saen Saep canal. At 72 kilometres long, one could say it’s a real ‘Far Canal’, especially as he has allocated ฿7 Billion to it! This seems a somewhat irresponsible waste of public funds for the benefit of a select few who live along its banks or who travel along it. Instead of the public purse funded this project, the money should be sourced through a public-private partnership!

As for the rest of the report, especially the economy, despite the urgent measures and incentives, he really didn’t have too much happiness to bring to the people.

This wasn't a speech about what he's done, it was a speech about what he plans to do and is asking other people to do. I didn't read one significant accomplishment.

Eighteen months since the coup and this "reform government" hasn't even stated what reforms it intends to implement, or done much else beyond tighten its grip on power. It's almost like they're just killing time, waiting for something. I wonder what?

Enough about that. Anyone know when the new season of "Game of Thrones" begins?

There are a lot of entrenched and vested interests. This country is a potential powder keg.

I wish this government would put forth a set of laws to provide more rights, benefits, etc for persons married and/or retired. Five year visa, 180 day online check, simplify small business law and investment, offer PR to marrieds over five years, special TEFL teaching licences for degreed (US,CA, UK), allow easier teacher movement, allow married men to invest in one condo with money abroad which cannot be claimed by wife in divorce, allow foreign (married?) men to own up to 2 rai and home exclusively with money abroad as well as business property with land value of 2M. Clarify parental rights issues as well as visa issues for foreigners who are living with and supporting their Thai children. Allow used household goods to be imported by foreigners that are married or retired. Fast tracked, no tax, no nonsense.
