Extending a visa while in Thailand - Jomtien

Featured Replies

We live in Ireland but have a studio in Pattaya - Jomtien . This year we cant send our pasports off to the Irish Thai Consulate for visas ! So my question is if we fly into Thailand and get the 30 day visa on arrival can we extended it for another 30 days- or would we only get 15 days ! while we are there like going to the office on Soi 5 in jomtein. we ill also be flying off to Burma- Myanmar- for the visa- for a break. we leave March 14th to Uk.TXS in advance

You can extend a 30 day visa exempt entry (it is not a visa on arrival) for 30 days at an immigration office for a fee of 1900 baht.

When fly back in from Myanmar you will get another 30 day entry that you can then extend for a another 30 days.

^ Visa On arrival is only required for citizens of these countries (and it costs 1000 THB)

19 Countries eligible to enter Thailand under the VISA ON ARRIVAL rule:

  • Bhutan
  • China
  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic
  • Estonia
  • Hungary
  • India
  • Kazakhstan
  • Latvia
  • Liechtenstein
  • Lithuania
  • Maldives
  • Mauritius
  • Poland
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Taiwan
  • Ukraine

What you will get (as a UK Citizen) on Arrival in Thailand, is not called a Visa on Arrival but a Visa Exempt, which is good for 30 days as Joe already pointed out.

The usual concern: without a visa the airline might refuse you boarding with a return flight over 30 days after arrival.

sorry bit of a misunderstanding on my part I think ! I'm still not sure ! We arrive Dec 29th and we have our flight booked for March 14th back to UK. so when we arrive we get a - 30 day visa exempt entry - correct ! Because we know we are getting only 30 day visa can we extend that without leaving Thailand. Dont they want proof of your leaving !

Timely topic.

My situation similar. Will be traveling Nov 27 returning Jan 9, and as an American should be visa exempt for 30days.

Concerned about the Airline and Thai Passport control stopping me b4 I enter, but believe I could extend in Hua Hin to make everything fine.

Luckily, I don't have to mail passport, so just a matter of trekking to the local embassy.

It's not a visa on arrival, you would get a 30 day visa exempt entry (no visa, but permission to stay) at the airport. During the last week on that entry you could apply for an extension of 30 additional days at the Jomtien immigration office.

we ill also be flying off to Burma- Myanmar- for the visa- for a break

Not sure exactly what this means, If you fly out and return to Thailand you can repeat the same visa exempt process a second time.

To maximize your stay, you would need to plan your out/in journey near the end of your first 60 day stay (30 day entry +30 day extension), to get a total of nearly 120 days.

The one caution is that since you will be flying in on two occasions without a visa in hand, the airlines might require you to have an outward flight booked.

You might consider getting a tourist visa at a neighboring country at the end of the first 60 day stay.

Just to reiterate that your airline might not let you board unless you can show that you have a flight leaving Thailand within thirty days. Perhaps you can bring your Myanmar trip forward to within thirty days of your arrival. That flight booking will be enough to placate your airline.

When you leave Myanmar, you'll get another 30 day visa exemption, which you can extend whilst in Jomtien for 1900 baht. Alternatively, if you are hanging around in Yangon for a couple of days, you can pick up a Tourist visa there for US$40.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just flew into Thailand on Etihad and they DID check my VISA at check-in as my round trip tickets placed me in Thailand for 44 days. Don't know if I could have talked my way on board, but glad I had gotten the VISA.

I had also given my kids US passports (where their local visas are), but the airline wanted their Thai passports for boarding.
