Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana has begun a Gripen fighter flight-training programme at Wing 7 in Surat Thani, with the course expected to move through to a possible solo flight. The privately undertaken Royal Thai Air Force programme started on Thursday, August 20, and is scheduled to continue until September 4. Reports said that, if completed successfully, it could make Queen Suthida the first reigning queen to fly a fighter aircraft. Flight instructors and aviation specialists are supervising the training and guiding Her Majesty through the Air Force's standard stages. Training at Thailand's Gripen base Wing 7 is the principal operating base for Thailand's Gripen 39 C/D fleet. Before beginning the fighter programme, Queen Suthida made several private visits to the Surat Thani base, studying the aircraft's technical systems and speaking with operational pilots. Her preparation also included training on the L-39 advanced jet trainer at the Royal Thai Air Force Flying Training School in Kamphaeng Saen district, Nakhon Pathom. She also completed several simulator sessions, including recent training at the Royal Thai Air Force facility in Don Mueang. The Air Force marked 15 years since the Gripen 39 C/D fighters and Saab 340 airborne early-warning aircraft entered Thai service at Wing 7 in July 2026. Aviation qualifications span military and civilian flying Queen Suthida has extensive military and civilian aviation experience, having completed aviation courses with both the Royal Thai Air Force and Royal Thai Army before undertaking further training in Germany. She completed the Royal Thai Air Force Civilian Aviation Course on December 8, 2010, flying a Cessna T-41. On January 16, 2011, she completed the Army Fixed-Wing Aviation Cadet Course at the Army Aviation School, also using a Cessna T-41. On December 6, 2012, Her Majesty completed an aviation course at the Royal Thai Air Force Flying Training School, flying CT-4E and PC-9 aircraft. Her subsequent German training included a Private Pilot Licence covering the Cessna 172, Mooney M-20 and Piper PA-34 Seneca. She also gained a Commercial Pilot Licence with a Boeing 737 type rating and Airline Transport Pilot Licence theory qualification. Queen Suthida later obtained an Airline Transport Pilot Licence from the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand and has served as co-pilot aboard royal Boeing 737-400 and Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The Gripen programme marks a further move from civilian, military-training and commercial aircraft towards an operational fighter platform.
