BANGKOK: -- A 53-year-old driver was arrested by police after almost 50 kilometres of chase from Ang Thong province to Suphanburi yesterday.

The driver Jongrak Naka was charged with driving on the influence of drug when he drove his van with five passengers on board from a checkpoint in a bid to flee.

The van was stopped at a checkpoint manned with transport officials in front of the transport office in Ang Thong province for check after he was seen to be drunk.

But as two police officers approached, Jongrak got back to his van and drove off.

A police car then gave chase bit couldn’t stop him.

He drove in fast speed throughout a 50 kilometre distance from the checkpoint to Suphanburi with the police car following behind.

It was before entering Suphanburi when one of the tyres bursted, but he continued driving.

The police car gave signals to other vehicles to stay off and warned people by the broadside to aware of the van.

The police car was able to stop the van shortly after it lost control and couldn’t run further.

He was apprehended, in drunkenness, which later proved to be under the influence of drug.

No drug was found in his possession.

He confessed to take marijuana before driving and was afraid of being arrested after seeing the police walking to him at the transport checkpoint.

Investigation later revealed he had been arrested once last year for driving under the influence of drug.

Few months ago somebody I know (Thai) was pulled into a checkpoint. Made to piss test and the cop said 'positive for ganja' 20,000 bt or go into the system. He paid, maybe this guy didn't have the means. Problem is he could killed all aboard, these drivers should be vetted/tested on regular basis if they want the job of keeping people safe as they travel.

"The police car was able to stop the van shortly after it lost control and couldn’t run further."

So they didn't really stop it then did they.....

They did apprehend a drugged driver but that wouldn't help your agenda, would it?.

My complaint was with poor reporting but it doesn't suit your agenda to read and think before you post does it.

Im guessing there has been a crackdown on the farang proof writers at PBS

I'm guessing that you mean "proofreader"?

That would be what you need to get to ensure that your grammar is 100% correct before posting pedantic criticism on a forum that didn't produce the (comparatively well-written) report.

For a site/broadcaster that claims to be an English language one it was a very poorly written report.

So the extremely opinionated TV posters will jump on the Van wagon (no Pun intended and probably none taken),

and use this one mentally challenged person to negate the use of Marijuana....The way I read into this is, that if weed were

legal this mentally challenged person would not have fleeted.....He wasn't driving dangerously before the check point....

As a matter of interest, how do you know he wasn't driving dangerously before the check point...?

On the opposite actually, looks like the reefer madness gave him the skills of a F1 driver. That, or he had a super souped up van. Or of course it could be utterly incompetent police drivers..

Friend of mine ( Farang ) was pulled at a checkpoint in Pattaya, so drunk he could hardly stand up, it cost him more than 20,000 though.

Being afraid of being arrested what a surprise from the junkie frightened of having to pay the 200 Baht fine, and as for the police car not being able to catch the high powered vehicle driven by the druggie, so what is all the years of specialist police driver training been for, or was the whole exercise just to protect the foreign visitors to Thailand in the new Thai junta safety campaign.

Don't the RTP have radios ? In most civilized places, car chases have been banned due to the danger to those concerned and bystanders; you can still see them in the movies however.

It's so simple to radio ahead for a roadblock or puncture strips ( or both). Amazing that no one was killed during the 50 km.

This is the stupid/scary thing - a van driver arrested on a drugs change and straight back on the road driving passengers......
