When I saw it, I thought it was just a 'one-off,' but now I've seen a couple of them.

A cop at the intersection of the Superhighway and Chottana Rd yesterday at 4:30pm, just standing there facing the northbound traffic.... Another riding a motorbike along the west side of the moat... One more watching traffic near Airport Plaza....

I wonder who's idea this is? Local big brass or real Big Brass?

I think it will be common some day that everybody walks around with PRD (Personal Recording Device). They'll have dynamic cloud storage. Imagine the reduction in personal crime if the bad guy knows that everything is automatically being recorded and instantly uploaded to the user's cloud account.

I am so happy to hear of this!

It may just be a trial-balloon experiment or maybe a couple of younger and wealthier cops flexing. Who cares. Bring it on and bring it on "in your face".

Oh my goodness, did I just raise the notion of "face is important"?

Too bad suckers, cameras own your face and traditional "face"saving just isn't going to cut it anymore! Check out Taiwan, China, Singapore for how much "face" really counts anymore.

No hiding now - just smile that smile for the cameras.

Interesting, I remember not so long ago, someone reporting on here that a policeman had ordered him to remove his helmet cam as wearing one on your helmet was against the law! I can't remember if he was fined or not.

Right on.....interesting thought.

Seriously; is that the kind of world you want to live in?

Yes, I remember that too.

Only illegal when you can record the handing over of the 200 baht for the imagined offence.

i see some motorbike taxis are wearing them in Bangkok, so they can record the time when they cut up a driver and get knocked off lol !!

Imagine the dearth of amature head-cam videos that will be on YouTube. Might be a bit of a pickle for the "Thai happiness/we inspected ourselves and there ain't no corruption within our ranks" crowd.

Visual images are very potent and are a common language unto themselves..

It is probably just a "Test Run", like the Advertising TV's inside the BTS cars. They will be testing for a decade ... or forever.

I'm running with a helmet camera these days. Mounted on the side, because I'd look like a teletubby if it was mounted on top, and because of the thread others mentioned of the cop in Pattaya trying to bust someone with a helmet camera ("Safety! Safety!" as I recall was reported as what he said).

While the camera generates a massive amount of data, I can say that mostly, I like it quite a bit. When stopped by cops at a checkpoint somewhere in the sticks north of Kalisan a month or so ago, they were all nice and very polite, as they looked at the camera on the side of my helmet. They did wish that I could either speak Thai or Lao for some reason or another, but I had already told them "Kohtoht, krup, dtae wah pom mai dai poot pahsah tai krup" (clearly, they believed me). And when I stopped to ask a Bangkok policeman for directions, he was all smiles. Instead of maybe telling me my bike was too loud, he looked at the camera and told me that it sounded really good.

I have no idea whether the helmet camera was a factor in either of the situations described above. Mostly, my thinking is just that it would be good to have a video record of whatever might have happened in any accident. I haven't seen a down side to having one yet.
