disabling wifi

Featured Replies

to your courtesy

I am connected to the Internet through a TOT router TP-Link model TD-W8961-ND which has two small black buttons to disable the wifi and the wps functions. As I don't need the wifi function and as I am struggling with a download speed which is only around 7 Mbps, I wonder to know if I could get a better speed by keeping disabled the wifi and wps functions.

Thank you in advance.

You can disable WiFi on most all-in-one routers via configuration pages, but it won't help a bit with your downloads speeds via LAN cable

You should disable WPS anyway, it's generally a security hole.

But otherwise disable Wifi through the Router's admin page.

Out of interest what bandwidth are you expecting?

Have you done a speedtest to a local node?

Because if you get decent speed there, then there isn't a lot you can do about it without looking at connections to somewhere like Singapore, which others use and can probably explain here.

I agree, disabling WIFI will not help at all with download speeds (or upload speed for that matter).

OP, what data plan are you on and what are your download and upload speed for bangkok? www.speedtest.net

The only advantage of disabling WiFi is, that no one can try to hack in.

But if you are the sole user it will not help for speed.

You (still) have a 7 Mbit package? 590 Baht?

Did you ask ToT if a higher data rate (package) is possible?

Usually new connections have a 12 Mbit package at least.

It wont make any difference. Its completely unrelated. But make sure nobody connects to your Wifi without you knowing it by setting a long password. Because in this case you would share your bandwidth with unexpected guests

Some routers have an on/off button for wifi. Mine does. When I'm not using wifi on devices I like to turn it off as I dont see the advantage in subjecting my brain to microwaves for no reason, and I have it permanently turned off on my Sonos wireless speaker system (which is connected with ethernet cables) as one of the speakers is right next to my bed. I have my tablet and phone set to automatically deactivate wifi when the screen blanks also.

Just repeating: my first stop would be ToT and check for a higher bandwidth package possible?

What about a Fiber Glass Connection 20/10?

If the R-factor is too low then it's just a waste of money. Also, I find they tend to be 'scratchy'. The versions coated in resin work much better.
