BANGKOK: -- A 35-year-old British tourist was fatally injured after he jumped down from the second floor of the departure terminal of the Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Police said Beker Edwakb Francis died on his way to hospital shortly after he jumped from the second floor of the terminal at the spot between Gate 3 and Gate 4 at 0:10 am Friday.

Actually, security guards spotted Fransic trying to jump down at Gate 8 Thursday afternoon and took him to the security office to try to calm him down.

The man said he did not have money to buy plane ticket home so the airport officials were trying to contact the British embassy to locate his relatives.

Airport officials told police that the man came out of the office to smoke now and then and security officials always came out with him.

But at 10 minutes after midnight, he came out of the security office to smoke again but this time he ran very fast and jumped down.

BANGKOK: -- A stressed Irishman jumped to his death outside the departure terminal at Suvarnabhumi Airport yesterday after telling airport staff he could not afford a flight home.

According to police, airport staff first spotted the 35-year-old foreigner attempting to jump off the terminal near Gate 8 in the afternoon, so they took him to the tourist police department to calm him down.

The man initially refused to give his information and family’s contact. He kept asking for a smoke break every 10 minutes which were accompanied by airport staff. After he felt relaxed, he finally opened up and told the officers he was from Northern Ireland and wanted to go home but could not afford the THB22,000 flight.

Hours later after the airport staff tried to contact his family and embassy, the progress went no where, so they detained the Irishman because he was stressed out.

A 35 year old doesnt become so depressed that he commits suicide because he cant afford a lousy airline ticket.

Obviously alot more to this story. Thailand... 1. Business idea gone terribly wrong. 2.Taken for a fool by a Thai girl or a farang conman? They would be top of my list.

An officer investigates the scene where a British national fell to his death early this morning in an apparent suicide.

BANGKOK — A U.K. citizen fell to his death at Suvarnabhumi Airport early Friday morning in an apparent suicide.

The man plunged from the departure level at the airport at about 12:30am, said airport police commander Col. Kittipop Chompunut, adding that it was clearly a suicide.

“He was stressed,” the officer said, without elaborating.

Khaosod English is withholding the man’s name pending notification of his relatives.

The British national had earlier attempt to jump to his death but was stopped by airport security, according to another officer, Lt. Col. Kaweewattana Bangkhomtham.

The security guard later told police the man appeared to be in distress, Kaweewattana said.

i'm not defending the British Embassy since Im American and have no knowledge of them, but doesn't his family bear as much if not more responsibility than some strangers in an embassy.

If it was just the cost of an plane ticket surely their must have been some family member who could have helped?

The BBC series filmed at Suvanabhumi and also the recent Australian Embassy series both showed some very disturbed or very drunk people at the airport. People just turned up with ticketing problems or unable to pay for their flight home. Even the sober ones had trouble finding someone to pay for their ticket. People on those shows did some very silly things and made you wonder how they even made it to Thailand in the first place. Anyone who hasn't seen the shows should, if only to understand what staff at the airport and embassies sometimes have to deal with.

Suiciders are a strange lot. You cannot apply common logic to them. Of course it would be cheaper and easier to kill yourself at home. But who knows, maybe he wanted to see something nice once before his act. Why not Thailand. Also, if you know about depression, it comes in leaps and bounds. It is very strong one day and totally absent the other. Typically, the impulsion to kill yourself occurs when there is not at present a material reason to do so, or that reason has ceased for the moment. When there is adversity, that stimulates the will to fight. You cannot, then, rely on always finding such al reason, such as a girlfriend who has left him etc.

Not everyone is close with their families and what were the embassy mean`t to do at such short notice? Embassy staff are not the Samaritans, quick come out now, we have one of your subjects that is depressed and if you don`t give him his fare home in the next few minutes he will top himself?

We don`t know the circumstance and probably never will know. The man was determined to kill himself and that was that.

That's inside the terminal. He jumped from the outside ramparts down into the taxi area. As usual slack reporting and skimmer reading has people thinking he was at the departure gates. It's all moot, that entire airport has thousands of 'launch' platforms. It was, and is, a world class example of how not to build a public space. Ever heard the unbearable racket thousands of wheelie bags make on those steel grille Walkways?

Yes, what you say is true, but that must beg the question, why do so many become so befuddled? I have lived and worked in Asia for almost 50 years. I have seen literally hundreds of farangs similarly devastated. Sure, not all of them commit suicide, but they become distressed, mentally disturbed, emotionally handicapped, and in general a danger to themselves and to others.

I have not noted the same proclivity among farangs who stay in farangland--true, I have not spent as much time in farangland, and true too, it may be that such occurrences in farangland are not as widely publicized, or at least not as widely known to a community. However, the numbers of otherwise normal farangs who are cuckolded and/or lose everything to their gfs or to business partners is astonishing. Could it be expats can amass more discretionary funds than can those in farangland? That those same expats have no, or very little, knowledge of business or devious emotional agenda. Do these things contribute to these happenings? What may be other potential causes?

Am I the only one who sees this?
