'Fast and Furious' French trafficker arrested in Bangkok

BANGKOK (AP) — Officials say a French drug trafficker who was part of a notorious international network that copied tactics from Hollywood's "Fast and Furious" films has been arrested in Bangkok.

Thai and French police said Monday that Andre Cabau was arrested Friday on charges of having entered Thailand with a fake French passport.

French police attache Catherine Occhini described him as "a big fish." She said he will be deported to continue serving a seven-year sentence in France on drug trafficking charges.

Cabau was convicted in 2007 and released on early parole but fled to Thailand.

Thai police said in a statement that Cabau's network smuggled drugs from around Europe into France. It added that they "copied the famous movies "Fast and Furious," where they used high-speed cars to transport the drugs."

BANGKOK: -- A FRENCHMAN, wanted in France for allegedly conspiring with others to move illicit drugs around Europe, has been arrested in Bangkok, Pol Maj-General Apichat Suriboonya, chief of the Police Foreign Affairs Division, told the press yesterday. Also present was the French Embassy's police attache Catherine Occhini.

Andre Cabau, 39, who reportedly copied tactics used in the Hollywood blockbuster "Fast and Furious" when moving the narcotics, will be deported to continue serving his sentence in France. He was arrested on November 20 at a condominium in Onnut for allegedly using a fake passport and staying in Thailand illegally. He has been in the country since January 2013.

The Interpol branch in Thailand first contacted French authorities to check on the suspect's history and fingerprints before it was discovered that he was involved in many crimes, had been in and out of prison more than 10 times and was a highly-wanted member of a drug ring, Apichat said.

In the latest offence, he and other members of the gang allegedly used a caravan of fast sports cars like in the film to smuggle four kilograms of cocaine and 10,000 packs of ecstasy pills from the Benelux economic union (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg) into France. However, they were caught in 2005 and sentenced to 10 years jail.

After serving seven years, he was granted parole in 2011, which required him to remain in France. But he fled to Thailand and "lay low".

Cabau's younger brother who allegedly ran a drug ring was also fatally ambushed leading to headline news in France in 2013, Apichat added.Cabau told the press that though he had used sports cars to smuggle drugs into France, he had not been involved with the drug ring in France. He said he had fled to Thailand because he loved the lifestyle and had only kept in touch with his family since moving here.

Deputy national police chief Pol General Wuthi Liptapallop said Cabau's arrest came about due to measures put in place to detect fake passports in order to prevent transnational crimes. Looking back at cases until March 2014, he said they had found fake passports had been used in up to 550 cases.

Consider for one minute just how many criminals may be hiding out here, if someone as notorious as this is able to enter the country and live here for more than 2 years undetected.

There may be hundreds of small-time scum living here on the proceeds of their crimes. Such people will not hesitate to contribute to corrupt officials and local crime.

But it is possible he may be a "digital nomad" and feels he should be afforded the right to live here illegally if he so wishes...

So he is wanted in France for something and gets deported. Meanwhile a Dutch guy gets years in jail here for nothing ??

Seems like its a lottery here !!

There does not seem to be any legal or court process whatever to carry out a deportation, under the present regime. If any embassy says "we want him ", the person is immediately sent to that country, with no questions asked -- no right of appeal.

BTW isn't this the Frenchman who has been living in Thailand for five years, and using his fake passport to appear legal all of that time.

EDIT. I just checked and it is the same guy they arrested a few days ago (Nov 21). This is just a new photo op, this time with the woman from the French Embassy and the perp has changed his black T-shirt for a yellow one.

If, as your name suggests you are from New Zealand then the name 'Keith' is very strange for a Maori person... Very presumptuous that you call yourself kiwi anything, no doubt.

Well, he was validated as being on an Interpol list and was in possession of a fake passport to boot ... and you want a further legal process in Thailand to vet such cases?

The problem is the Dutch guy did nothing wrong as far as we can tell. Apparently he operated

a legal business and paid his taxes. But he pissed off someone in Holland who asked the

Thais to look in on him. While his business was legal in Holland he seems to have been

banged up in Thailand for transferring money here that were proceeds of drug sales. So

according to here money laundering. I shake my head, but that is how I understand it. blink.png

This guy is in a much better position. I am sure he brought or transferred money that were

genuinely proceeds from a crime (drug sales) but he is being sent home.

My guess is he had no assets here while the Dutch guy had plenty of property and cash to make

it worth while for those in power to go after him.

In a country with an impartial judiciary and personal rights, the police present their case ( " validated as being on an Interpol list and was in possession of a fake passport ") to a judge. Then the defendant presents his case ( if any ) to the judge. The judge then decides whether to issue a deportation order or not. It's not a police decision. Do you see the difference ?

who is the blonde old <deleted> ?

I looked up "biacth" but could not find it. Perhaps you mean the triumphant, snotty looking middle aged blonde woman -- she is "French Embassy's police attache Catherine Occhini"

The difference is the Dutch care was so weak they didn't have enough evidence to even convict so they asked/told the rtp to roll him over....

The Dutch guy was clearing something like 500 million thb a year and had much luxury mansions so that's what probably sealed his fate...... This guy caught with nothing except a rented apt and on overstay.....

Really??? Gossh I honestly thought that was what all Frenchmen looked like.... not.

Maybe try looking up the word 'sarcasm' when you have a spare 5 minutes - perhaps that is a form of humour never seen in France too ;-)

In your rush to prove he is not "original" French, you do, of course, realize that the Maghreb area of N.W.Africa was part of the French protectorates of Morocco, Algeria & Tunisia. Perhaps he is Corsican?

Do you have a particular image of just what an "Original" Frenchman should look like.

The simple fact is that this man is French.
