Getting the most out of a 30 day residency certificate; can I get a Thai driver's licence?

I'm heading down to immigration across form Promenda to get a residency certificate so I can buy a scooter.

However, I note that the residency certificate is only valid for 30 days. Since I'm going to all this trouble to get it, I'm thinking perhaps I should try to get the most out of it. Any suggestions?

For example can i use this to get a Thai drivers licence? I come to Thailand with 60 day tourist visas. Are 1) the residency certificate plus 2) the 60 day visa plus 3) my foreign and 4) international drivers licences enough for me to secure a Thai drivers licence?

Last count they would issue the 1 year licenses on a tourist visa..

You still have to watch the video and take the reaction tests.. Possibly do the theory multiple choice too.. But not the actual driving test..

Nothing to lose trying. Bring some 100B doctor paper, that you are in good health. If your license is not in English, you need an "official" translation (which is BS by itself as there are no official notaries). That paper is good too, if you want to apply for a yellow housebook next smile.png. Good luck!

Sorry friend but the Res Cert office is NO longer where you specified. I went just today to make my application for the Res Cert (broke my ass looking for the place across from Prom) and was told by the kindly clerk "no longer here'. Go to Promenada Mall and find it there.

I did and they took my 500 baht and told me to return tomorrow. So at least the turnaround time is improved.

I believe you will find that they keep the residence certificate when you buy and register a new vehicle as they send it off to the department of land transport along with the vehicle registration forms.

UK is correct on this so the OP needs two CR. One for the bike and one for the DL.

No you can do multiple vehicles or vehicles plus licenses on one cert.. The trick is to go downstairs where they make a formal copy, sign and stamp it, and that copy is then good for the other parts.. Thats how they do bike and car licenses at the same time..

The res cert from immigration is only valid for I think 14 days.. But can be used for many things in that 14 day window with those 'magic copies'.. I was told embassy letters valid for 30 but I have never gone that route.

Tested that early this year..

Depends on the LTD. Some LTD's do not accept copies and the CR is good for 30 days not 14.

Its generally the incorrect name given to the 'confirmation of address' letter from immigration.

In most situations where this is needed you can use

1) Letter from immigration

2) Letter from your embassy

3) work permit

4) Yellow house book

I have heard of some LTOs being confused by and refusing the yellow house book, but they 'should' take it.

My understanding is that it's good for the purpose issued only if issued by immigration. Drivers licence is one purpose so car and bike ok. But car and rego, I don't think so. A RC from an embassy states no purpose so maybe could get away with colour photocopy.

If you do not have a valid motorcycle license from your home country, you will be required to take ALL tests to obtain the license.

You CAN use an RC from the embassy to get a license or for any purpose you may need to show one.

If you are buying a scooter, best get your license or risk getting caught without one and paying the new fine for not having a license of 10,000฿.

I feel you will need a cert for each transaction.....ie.,buying a vehicle, selling a vehicle or getting a licence....3 certs. They keep them when you hand it to them.

Yeah. Sorry maybe my post ambiguous. An embassy one shows no purpose so can be used for any purpose. An immigration one can only be used for the purpose quoted when requesting issue.
