Condom maker calls for safe-sex emoji to mark World AIDS Day

PARIS: -- World AIDS Day is being celebrated around the world.

In Thailand, hundreds of people joined a parade around the popular tourist town of Pattaya City to hand-out condoms to passers-by as tradition here dictates.

There’s been a significant 31 percent drop over the past decade in the number of new infections in the Asia Pacific region, but health campaigners say the global alert remains high.

“This is no time for triumphalism, it’s no time for complacency, AIDS is not over, the job is not yet finished. The progress I talked about is fragile, unfinished and reversible,” said Simon Bland, director of the joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

One condom maker, meanwhile, has launched a campaign for the coding consortium, Unicode to adopt a safe-sex emoji.

Durex says in the age of smartphones and tablets, such a small icon could prove crucial in helping young and old to communicate their feelings more comfortably.

36.9 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2014. Of these, 2.6 million were children (<15 years old).

Between 2000 and 2015, new HIV infections have fallen by 35%, AIDS-related deaths have fallen by 24% with some 7.8 million lives save.

The Owner of the Restaurant called Cabbage and Condoms, has done a great job for Thailand. Not sure if he still owns it or not.

He has help many Thai women in dealing with problems with his clinc behind the restaurant.

Also good food, and interesting condom art !

Maybe they could stick the emoji on those mobile phone apps which are being blamed for a spike in HIV figures among the young across Asia.

And better be quick about it. In Bangkok, according to the Guardian a couple of days ago, young gays now have a one in three chance of infection.

Condoms? You can lead a horse to water. . .
