Cop sacked over gaur smuggling

BANGKOK: -- Provincial Police Region 3 chief Pol Lt-General Thawitchat Palasakhas dismissed Police Senior Sgt-Major Mongkhon Boonmachuen, 47, from civil service after he was nabbed yesterday while smuggling 246 kilograms of gaur carcasses using a police car in Chaiyaphum's Khon San district.

Thawitchat said the 47-year-old traffic policeman would face criminal investigation and punishment to set an example to others.

Mongkhon and accomplice Preecha Prabphan, 32, were apprehended at 8.30am at a checkpoint by police and Phukhieo Wildlife Sanctuary officials.

Mongkhon reportedly confessed to the crime, which he claimed to be his first offence, and |said he was hired by a hunter to transport the carcasses to a merchant in the district in exchange for some gaur meat. The duo faced the charge of having in possession parts of a protected species without permission.

What he meant to say: This was his first offence where he forgot to pay the higher ups.

Funny how lower ranked police can be sacked outright while those with higher ranks seem to be transferred to inactive posts no matter what they've done. Part of Thainess I guess...

I was in Southern Thailand about a month ago and stopped at a local shop to eat.I Was coming from a Wildlife refuge center. It was owned by a policeman I found out later. I went to the back of the shop and found Guar meat and wild deer. I asked where they got it and no one said a word. Go figure. I am surprised there are any animals left in the Wildlife reserves and N.P.'s to be honest.

Probably the inactive post department was oversupplied already.

So they can sack cops? I thought they were only allowed to move them to other provinces. But I suppose corruption is seen as a much less serious offense than guar smuggling.

You can be pretty damn sure that gaur smuggling, or any other illegal activity, goes hand in glove with widespread bribery and corruption
