My final post on the TV forums

Hi guys

It is with great regret I must announce my withdrawal from the TV forums.

For some time I have had eyesight problems, but just over a week ago it took a dramatic and unexpected turn for the worse, and I now find it very difficult to use my compter and phone

I have enjoyed posting here and have learnt a lot and I hope I have been also able to help ithers with my suggestions. However my sight is now such that it is a great strain to do anyting on the PC and I am having to adapt my life accordingly. Whilst I can still read short posts with difficulty it is a big strain and I am trying to keep things to a minimum.

So thanks to all on the TV forums for an interesting andentertaining time.

Finally a plea.

If there are any computer geeks in the Det Udom / Kantalac area who would be able to visit and help[ me set up some of the visual aides on my Ubuntu desktop system, it would be a great help and I would gladly provide them with a few beers for their time. Pleae PM me if you can help

Thaimite (Roy)

I did some teaching in a blind school in Hanoi. Over 10 years ago now but the students were using computers with normal Windows by means of software called Jaws Program for the Blind. This program would speak out (with a terrible American accent) the contents of Window boxes etc.

It was quite an eye opener for me to see how easily the blind students adapted to using computers.

Only downside I think is that this program is not cheap and probably not available as a copy in Pantip Plaza.

Many thanks for your input

I have been using linux for about 8 years and all my software is orientated that way.

I know thete ate tools available but as I was badly prepared for this turn of events had not set them up.

My main need is help in configuring and following on line instructions. I.e. so amy help is an advantage

My eyes are a problem too. Now have a big screen and increased stuff to 150%...Sort of OK but some stuff requires reducing and putting back to 150%....Don't give up matey...smile.png

Most browsers you can hold down the CTRL key and use the mouse scroll wheel or +/- key to zoom in/out.

My nephew is functionally blind as a result of an accident. He became an expert at using DRAGON software that converts text to speech. He was hired by a large NGO to develop online job training programs for the blind using voice chat with Dragon. Dragon has a steep learning curve but it is such a comprehensive and useful program that it is worth the investment in time and energy.

He also uses a 50" HD 1080P flatscreen TV as a monitor for his laptop via HDMI and using large type can read from that.

If Thai Visa has been important to you then you should be able to continue on participating as ever; one of the advantages of modern technology.

Have you explored every avenue regarding your viewing on the computer, have you been to a specialist, IT or medical for advice?

What is your eyesight problem?

Well, if you were using windows and the Chrome Browser, there is an extension that you can add to Chrome to invert white and black. You can also zoom and unzoom the browser window by using the drop-down menu at the upper right of the browser. You may want to switch to Windows so that you'll be able to see and use your computer. It would be a shame to give it up because of the limitations of Ubuntu.

BTW, all of my phones also have a way to invert black and white and zoom the screen. I do it every day to read the NYT on my phone. Good luck.

Yes I make extensive use of inver colours as well as the tslk back facility.

Also a big help are apps luke pocket which will compose an article from a web page and then let me listen to it with the built in TTS (Text to Speach) function
