NCPO to prevent people from fighting over water

BANGKOK, 9 December 2015 (NNT) - The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has been reaching out to people affected by the water shortages in an effort to resolve disputes over diminishing resources.

NCPO Secretary-General Gen Theerachai Nakawanich has convened a meeting over the drought crisis. To prevent unnecessary fighting over water, the Peace and Order Maintaining Command (POMC) will ensure that water will be distributed evenly to drought-stricken communities.

The amount of water in major dams in Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham and Roi Et provinces remain at critical lows. In Kalasin province, water levels in the Chi River are declining rapidly, with many areas already feeling the effects.

Regional Irrigation Office 6 has strongly advised farmers living in the vicinity of the Chi River against growing off-season rice, as rice paddies require a large amount of water to sustain crop cultivation.

Meanwhile, the army, as well as a private organization, have given residents of Nakhon Phanom warm clothes, as temperatures dropped to 16 degrees Celsius. A help center will be set up to assist any who are affected by the chilly weather.

That pesky foreign General El Nino messing up their plans! No water; no crops ..it won't be pretty. The nails are being knocked in a bit more vigorously now.

just don't grow any rice. drink some beer. visit your geek. give your Toyota pickup back to the bank. play the lottery. problem solved.

And how many months have they been saying this to the rice farmers? The leader had ordered off season crops to be stopped yet, it was just a lot of hot air falling on deaf ears. Seems to happening quite often with him now that he is no longer a Gen. in the army. Pesky peasants can't be ordered. I say kill them all and let the people suck the water from the bodies to grow their crops heheee...

Signed! The devils advocate!

In our village just about everyone has just planted, or is preparing their paddy, for the next crop. Poor farmers have my sympathy but I am at a loss to understand what seems like a fruitless and ultimately very expensive exercise.

And just what does the government expect the farmers to use for money if they can't grow a crop? Be business consultants?

Hopefully they will take advantage of the low water levels to do maintenance and make

improvements. Clean up waterways of garbage and growth. Deepen reservoirs and

holding ponds. Strengthen dams. In general make things better for the next flooding

or future droughts. In short some infrastructure improvements that will be easier to

do now. whistling.gif

Sorry, but this will be impossible.

I wonder how you can tell if you are in a drought risk area.

I guess I am not.

But not sure.

Your attitude is typical of the rice farmers - their meager income is more important than others thirst.

I live in rural Khampaeng Phet next to the Mae Wong national park.

The 2016 drought started for us last week when the government water supply was cut off. The PuYai Ban made the official announcement a couple of days ago.

I AM sure that I live in a drought risk area. this year 2015 we had no water supply from the government for 7 months and had to rely on the fire truck every 2 or 3 weeks to fill the storage ongs.

Yesterday my wife went to the Tessaban in the big village to sign for the first lot of water for the coming year.
