I am not in Thailand anymore and not planning on visiting anytime soon. I have a bit of a problem though.

There was no way around using SCB and Kasikorns stupid OTP passwords for their online banking, so I used to keep my AIS SIM card alive with *500*9# for years.

Now my AIS SIM card died and I can no longer perform any transactions via online banking. Of course there is also no way to change the phone number online.

I still need to use my Thai bank accounts.

What is the easiest way to change my phone number with the banks without going to a branch?

Do those two banks currently accept mobile numbers from other countries to receive the OTP?

Does either SCB or Kasikorn allow exceptions where a customer does not want to use OTP?

thanks

Your best bet might be to contact the head office in Bangkok and see if they can arrange for you to do it with a power of attorney form - and have someone you trust take that to the local branch, with copies of your passport, etc. And get the number changed that way.

If you really need the bank account then start searching for cheap flights. You need to visit your home branch with your bank book, passport and your new phone number.

Was your sim card registered with your name, etc? Unregistered sim cards are being disconnected.

I am not able to fly there and yes I need the bank accounts very much.

I am trying AIS customer support, otherwise I suppose I will have to try to get a Thai lawyer with POA to sort it out for me.

Any reasonable offers from lawyers in Phuket, message me.

I hate banks, they will all be dead soon, Bitcoin FTW.

The SIM card was not registered and it was a very old standard size SIM from 2006.

So you want:

▪ 1 the bank to change the phone number they use to stop fraudulent transactions (including transferring or spending the entire contents of the account) because

▪ 2 a lawyer who has never seen you gives them

▪ 3 a power of attorney nobody witnessed you signing

That sounds like it would work. Let us know how it goes, because if you manage it I'm changing banks.

Your only possible solution is via AIS, you will have to contact them and see if you can get your phone registered and re-activated either online or on the phone via Skype and don't forget to get International roaming so that you can receive free SMS from Thailand

I am afraid that there is no way that either one of your Thai banks is going to deal with you without your standing in front of them because of security concerns which is why they have those pesky and stupid OTP password requirements

AIS might just not be so rigid

Good luck

I'm guessing your AIS sim card "died" because you didn't register it. There was a cut off point earlier this year where any numbers that weren't registered would be disconnected. You needed to go into an AIS shop with your ID to do so. It might be worth contacting AIS and see if there's any way they can resurrect the number.

After that best to contact your bank, as different banks' procedures can differ. eg Bangkok Bank usually want me to print something off and take it in personally. TMB appears to have an online feature to change but as I haven't changed my number haven't done so. StanChart I can't do online, but have done in the past by calling their call centre.

So if you have a personal relationship manager call them. They can help sort it out for you.

If not try the call centre for online banking. Stan Chart as mentioned would take various personal details, with a few security checks and then change the mobile number. I did that a couple of years back for the kids.

With SCB, you can change your registered phone number at ANY branch as long as you have your passport.

Which really doesn't help the OP does it

So far no success, AIS keeps saying there is no way whatsoever to re-activate the SIM or number.

I asked one lawfirm that knows me personally, they say they can not help in any way.

I need to access the money in the accounts without flying to Thailand,

even it it means a lawfirm needs to help me to close the two bank accounts for me and wire the funds to my account outside of Thailand.

Any lawyer who reads this and can help, PM me or reply here.

Seems to me that the only easy option is to use your SCB and Kasikorns's ATM cards and pull all your money out of the account from overseas

But I remember seeing here at TV that AIS had suddenly stopped using the 1900 Mhz bandwith

Would seem to me that if you paid to keep your phone number alive that it is their responsibility to provide you with access since they changed the TOS on you, barring that make a complaint with the Office of Consumer Protection Board here:

I heard it's quite easy to transfer a number to another person. May be a trusty person of you could buy a new SIM within Thailand and transfer your old number to the new sim. Then he send the sim to you. This could work. May be a notarized Passport copy (notarized by a Thai Embassy) would be helpful.

Customers who have lost One-2-Call! phone or SIM card can contact AIS Call Center at 1175 to verify your personal data and get a new SIM card with the same number. Your account balance will remain the same as the day you requested a Call Barring service while your validity period during a Call Barring service will be lost.

Please keep us updated. This is quite interesting.

How much money are you talking about?

Have you tried their call centre? As mentioned, for StanChart I could do this over the phone, by providing various security details, although that was switching to another number in Thailand, not sure if they do for overseas.

However, my actual branch couldn't do this over the phone only in person, so I needed to do through the call centre. If call centre + security questions works at your bank, it shouldn't be difficult for someone to get and register a new SIM card and mail it to you.
