Transport Ministry Complicates Orange Line Plans

BANGKOK: -- Thailand’s Transport Ministry has stated that the ministry will review the western section of the Orange Line plan.

Residents in the area have refused to relocate, causing the ministry to have to review their plans for the construction of a 21.2 km rail that was approved on Wednesday. The rail will run from the Thailand Cultural Center to Mini Buri.

The transport minister discussed with local officials how the line would be created as it goes through residential areas. The orange line will go through the very crowded Soi Prachasongkhro 21.

Residents living in the area notified the government of the issue back in June when residents declared that they would petition the rail if it was approved by the cabinet.

The transport minister has told the Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) to review their current designs in an effort to avoid going to the land in the middle of communities.

They are confused. The Thai Cultural Centre to Minburi section of the Orange Line was approved and is not being revised. What they are talking about is the Western extension which is not part of the current package for the Eastern Section, which is still going for bidding and construction. The Western extension has had a public enquiry and is scheduled to go ahead later. People complained about the Eastern Section but it is still going ahead on its original route.

Presumably they knew then about the residents' refusal to relocate but, in true Thai bureaucratic fashion, no doubt presumed they could just ride roughshod over the objections.

City planning, evironmental impact studies, community forums, budgetting, displaying plans to public!!!! Am I missing something?

Presumably they knew then about the residents' refusal to relocate but, in true Thai bureaucratic fashion, no doubt presumed they could just ride roughshod over the objections.

Point taken, plus Thai ministries / agencies whatever basically don't talk to each other, even within the same ministry which also makes for frustration and duplication, lack of sharing of critical details.

Much work to be done to get all of this into more clarity, sharing and efficiency.
