butcher bloc

Featured Replies

has anybody seen butcher block free standing kitchen island either new or antique or somebody who can build one maybe 5-6 feet long

I'd be inclined to go out to Baan Tawai and ask the guys out there. They are sure to know someone that will make one up for you

Have you got a 10 key keyboard?

Mine has about 100 keys and it writes great sentences.

You're really in a bad mood tonight, aren't you Eyecatcher? Some people post using "devices" where typing can be difficult. I didn't have any problem in understanding his post.

I've been in numerous kitchens in Chiang Mai and haven't seen a buther block free standing kitchen island. You could contact some of the kitchen design companies like Homikitch http://www.homikitch.com/ although I didn't see anything like that on their website. With the appropriate photo they could probably have one built.

Frankly, this sort of "look" was great in Michigan, but I've grown rather fond of the nice granite counter tops here. Easier to keep clean.

Maybe you have seen the vendors with the pickup truck full of round chopping blocks of various sizes including thickness. I'd take an assortment of those blocks, same thickness, square the sides (gotta accept the waste) epoxy together with clamps and then onto a strong table top making the meter by meter 'block'.

Wood of different colors would make a nice contrast if fashion kitchen is the ultimate function of this block.

Chopping up hogs or calves? Chain saw and sharp butcher knives are needed.

Might want to re-think this one... Although the idea is great, these chopping blocks are just a few days away from the tree. The wood is still fresh and wet, and as they dry, often tend to crack a bit. I've bought several of these over the years to use as 'crafts work tops' and every one of them developed cracks. Still useful, but not quite as nice looking. Gluing several together would create even more stress as the wood shrinks. Spending time and energy assembling a large table from them, only to see them begin to split apart 6 months later would be sad. Perhaps letting them dry out for a year or two first, then use just the non-cracked parts to make the table top might work out better in the long run.

There's a woodworking shop on Hangdong road southbound approx 200m beyond Samoeng intersection. You can't miss the huge carved or polished stone and wood items out front. Inside, they have all manner of solid, fully dried furniture items made from tree trunks, workshop's out back. I would inquire there first and if they do not have a suitable butchers block in stock I'm sure one could be made to order. Take photo and dimensional sketch.

Agree with you Rob, they have some very nice pieces there. My brother was over a few months ago and was looking into filling up a few containers worth and shipping back to NZ. He was that impressed with there products.

I bought a big heavy wooden meat cutting and chopping block from one of the big markets. Worked great at first then after 2 weeks green mold began to grow all over it. Tried everything, bleach, wire wool, soap powder, nothing shifted it. The mold actually came from inside the wood so it was impossible to get rid of once it had taken hold.

Later I was told the wood has to be treated with some kind of anti fungal chemical before use. So if you buy any kind of wooden meat cutting table or block, make sure it has been chemically treated at the factory or from wherever it was made before buying it.

Send you PM of captains' Rob wood specialist adress

I'd be curious to know what that chemical is. Various arsenic compounds are often used to make wood resistant various kinds of organisms.

I know if these wooden chopping boards are bought from Tesco Lotus or other big stores, they have already been chemically treated. So that`s what I did and no problems. My girlfriend told me about the anti fungal treatment but as usual with Thais, no one seems to know anything when I ask.

One way of checking I discovered myself is that if the wood has a shine to it, like it`s been varnished, that is an indicated it`s been chemically treated. Just a tip what to look for if buying one of those tables, you know, buyer be aware sort of thing.
