PHUKET: -- A Phuket man carrying a bag with a land title deed and personal items was found dead in a coastal pond on Koh Maphrao.

Chalermpon Cheuanaka, 56, lived with his wife on the edge of a mangrove forest on the small island just off of Phuket.

“Inside his bag, we found shoes, a shirt, a helmet, a Chanote title, 587 baht, an identification card and a mobile phone,” explained Phuket City Police Deputy Superintendent Chao Phomna. “People said that he was a good swimmer and often swam to Phuket if he needed to get to the main island.”

Navy vet found dead in the sea off Phuket

PHUKET: -- Police are waiting for doctors to confirm the cause of death of a man, believed to be a retired Navy war veteran, whose body was found off Phuket’s east coast, at about midday Dec 14.

The owner of a local oyster farm reported finding the man’s body in the sea off Koh Maphrao, and called for assistance before bringing the body ashore to a pier at Koh Kaew, on Phuket.
The man, dressed only in his underwear, had a black plastic bag tied to the his wrist, said Lt Col Sakchai Chunyong of the Phuket City Police.

The bag contained some clothes, a pair of shoes, a helmet, a phone, about B600 cash, and a war veteran identification card identifying the man as Chalermphol Chueirnaka, 56.

The bag also contained several bronchodilators as well as a Chanote title deed for a plot of land at Baan Prusomphan in Tambon Thepkrasattri, Thalang, where Mr Chalermphol was registered as living.

Title makes it sound like a murder mystery.

Seems more like a heart attack.

That's possible, but mention of "several bronchodilators" suggests he was subject to breathing problems. I don't know very much about asthma, but I think it would be bad to have an attack when you're swimming and are several tens of meters from shore.

He obviously couldn't swim that well. Retired navy war veteran, what war ?

Thailand was involved in the war in Vietnam and also in Laos but from what I have found on Wikipedia the official engagement ended in 1972 or 43 years ago the the deceased would have been about 13 years old.

There have also been wars with Vietnam (via Cambodia) from 1979 to 1989 plus the 1987 to 1988 border war with Laos.

He would have been old enough to have been involved in those.

Try doing a little research before making off the cuff sarcastic comments. You may even learn something.
