Min of Foreign Affairs hosts 5th Thai – U.S Strategic Dialogue

BANGKOK, 16 December 2015 (NNT) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the US Department of State have co-organized the 5th Thai – US Strategic Dialogue, where delegates from both countries are looking to enhance bilateral cooperation in all areas.

The fifth bilateral conference was held at the ministry and co-chaired by Apichart Chinwanno, Thailand's Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs, and Daniel R. Russel, the US's Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. The conference will also be attended by the new US Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Glyn T. Davies.

The dialogue was organized to enhance bilateral relations in areas such as defense and security; trade and investment; education; science and energy. Both sides will also focus on cooperation that benefits regional and global development, such as public health; human trafficking and irregular migration; transnational crime; and peacekeeping activity.

Many issues tabled at the dialogue are of mutual interest to Thailand and the United States.

NNT needs an English lesson. When used in parliamentary proceedings, "tabled" has different meanings in US and UK English. In UK English, it means to consider for discussion. In US English, "tabled" means to postpone or suspend consideration. As this news release concerns US-Thai relations, it would be improper use of the term. However, given the current investigation against Mr. Davies, perhaps the US English meaning of "tabled" was correct.

Maybe "tabled" was a typo for "fabled."

Has the US delegation expressed understanding, nay admiration, for the governments herculean efforts to restore happiness to the people, by slavishly following the internationally admired roadmap? We need to be told!

It will be interesting to see if Mr Russel will 'table' (UK English) the issue of his ambassadors potential deportation on charges we can't mention, or whether, given those circumstances, it will be 'tabled' (US English). One hopes the former....

According to the Bangkok Post this morning Mr. Russel has said that only full US/Thai relations will continue only after a return to democratic rule. I don't think anything else could have been expected.
