BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration yesterday held a meeting with officials from 10 Bangkok districts deemed at most risk of dengue haemorrhagic fever in a bid to come up with prevention measures.

The move came as the number of Bangkokians suffering from the disease rose to 25,282 - three of whom have died.

Its current prevalence ratio is 444 per 100,000 of the population.

Suan Luang, Watthana, Bang Phlat, Huai Khwang, Lat Phrao, Saphan Sung, Bang Kapi, Chatuchak, Wang Thong Lang and Prawet had the highest number of dengue haemorrhagic fever patients between January 4 and December 12.

BMA deputy permanent secretary Wanthanee Wattana, who presided over the meeting at City Hall, said the highly publicised hospital stay ofTV star Thrisadee "Por" Sahawong boosted public awareness of the disease.

The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes.

Wanthanee urged officials and the public to destroy mosquito larva incubation areas.

When the common practice of thais is to leave water in buckets and troths dengue fever and mosquitoes will always have a place to breed. There is absolutely nothing any official can do to stop this and you can not tell a Thai person to stop this practice because they will only ignore you or think you are stupid and they know better or simply not care about this.

Enormous efforts have been made in tropical countries the world over to prevent dengue, malaria etc through mosquito eradication programs.

When the sole focus is on riots, preventing riots, coups & clampdowns on public dissent, plus add in the corruption involved when buying any and everything (mosquito fogging trucks), the public will suffer.

It all boils back down to one root cause - Corruption.

Quite true that most Thais will say "You don't understand" if it comes from a farang. If some Thai soap opera star says it though, they will take it as gospel.

I wonder what kills more people, dengue or the unhygienic markets where they cut pigs/chickens/fish/frogs with bare hands and then also take/give money to customers.

Yes, but don't forget please the vendors go to the toilet many times during their sale time in market, and bare hand ....

...and public awareness and education.

98% of the population stare at soapies every day. Throw in a few warnings about dengue!!

The dengue-carrying female mosquito normally attacks with 150 metres of her home pond. It wouldn't take Sherlock Holmes to work out why and where people are being infected.

Err... bit of a difference between a Soapie & a soap opera TV show.

I recall being a soapie once and wishing I could be there every day.

'BMA deputy permanent secretary Wanthanee Wattana ... urged officials and the public to destroy mosquito larva incubation areas.' Urged? Shouldn't the BMA be instructing the requisite staff to be doing so? Shouldn't it have been instructing them to do so, for some months, now?

What should be known is that Dengue mosquito bites during the day. It likes shadowy places and stays under stools and tables. One can protect oneself with proper clothing. Just think of the days of khaki... LOL tongue.png

Crashing the numbers it seems Bangkok has 5.7 million inhabitants. A bit of an underestimate in my opinion...

Of course if they were willing they could do something. Search for these places. If they find a big fee to the owner of the land. If he doesn't pay, confiscate whatever you can find there.

Some years ago i walked along a canal daily and there were many illegal houses built above them.

Those people didn't have windowscreens and were always at home. I still don't understand how they could keep the mozzies at bay.

Thinking of it, i've never seen the toiletbuilding on any market i've been to but i always see drains filled with water on the market. I even once stepped in one because it was dark and it was pretty deep....bah.gif

If they are like the canals around Chiang Mai, these are full of fish. The mosquitos would soon be supper!

My landlady had many small ponds with flowers, and always had some small fish in them. Not a wriggler in sight.

There is also available, 'mosquito sand', which is sprinkled into ponds etc which have no fish , and this stops mosquito eggs from hatching.

So don't shop in the markets. That is your choice. I have been shopping in local markets for decades without any ill effects.

By the way, money is one of the dirtiest things you can handle.

Also, and again by the way, why do so many here stay in Thailand when you so fear disease or people like me who sometimes wipe with their left hand and then wash?

I don't buy meat on markets but in all supermarkets they do the same:

They wear gloves but they always touch the outside of the plastic bag with the raw meat or the hand he used to grab minced meat. Then i ask for another bag and again he touches it with the same hand he grabbed the meat with. Supermarkets must have raw chickenbacterials all over them, everywhere.

But the smoke bombs look good, don't smell good, and since they bombed my soi mossies are worse.
