PHUKET: -- Officials are looking to build an alternative north-south road, parallel to Thepkrasattri Road, so those headed to Phuket International Airport can bypass the frustrating traffic jams.

“Because of the traffic congestion on the island, especially on Thepkrasattri Road, we need to focus on a plan to ensure that people can get to and from the airport in a reasonable amount of time,” said Phuket Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada earlier this week.

The roadway is slated to be constructed below high-power electric poles.

If they run the road under the high power lines it will work.

I've never seen a road running under them anywhere in the world and it won't be long before a truck or lunatic van driver to crash into one of these and bring a Island wide blackout.

The pole bases could be protected by concrete, if even needed.

I think that's a good idea. Take cars to places where nobody wish to build homes or parks.

A new road leading to the airport? Prime territory for more new businesses catering to the Chinese. Anuphas must have recovered the cost of their investment many times over with the businesses now open and more being built on their land next to the new roads.

Incidentally (and off topic!) anyone know where the latest new road leads to; the one opposite the road going to Headstart?

Maybe we should make a charity that campains for the fixing of phuket's traffic.

It would be quite easy, our plan would be to setup traffic deviders in 100% of 2lane roads. So you can't switch lanes and if there's a lane dedicated to turning at a light, the deviders are setup in concrete for 100m before the light. Charity would also provide daily fix to the plastic deviders to be fixed (or they could make them in metal)

If that was done, there would be almost 0 traffic in phuket after a week. Like chaofa west going north, the only reason it chokes there is that people get into the right lane to go straight, so they find 1 idiot who lets them pass and then 10-20 of them pass, the left side moves by 2-3 car instead of 20-30 at each green light. If you cut people, you get through right away , if you wait you literally wait at least 4-5 lights minimum. So it becomes non-sense to wait thus you start to cut too and you create more traffic for those people who are nicer/value their time less. Only way to prevent this is forcing people on the right to turn, they can youturn on the next road.
