Mining company urged not to sue schoolgirl

LOEI: The Thai Broadcast Journalists Association has called on a mining company to review its plan to sue a teenager for allegedly defaming it over the alleged negative impact of its gold mine on a community in Loei.

The comment was broadcast on public broadcaster Thai PBS in September during its "Citizen News" programme.

Thung Kham Co Ltd is suing Thai PBS and its executives and is seeking permission from the Loei Juvenile Observation and Protection Centre to take legal action against the 15-year-old secondary school girl, who lives in Wang Saphung district.

At a meeting on Friday, the TBJA executive board expressed its concern over the case and urged the company to review its decision to sue the schoolgirl, the association's president Thepchai Yong said Saturday.

Shameful behaviour by Thung Kham Co Ltd.

Many people, companies and States even around the world prefer to shoot the messenger than to actually address a problem.

It seems to be the case that Thai people, companies and the State are particularly keen on this approach to a problem as there is 1. FACE, and 2. Money involved. In that order.

The fact that a 15 year old school girl can cause such an action by a company, presumably run by mature men (read 'boys') shows just how low the moral standards of these people are. Bullies, all of them.

Brings to mind the recent case of students being bullied by the State - having their train carriage disconnected from the train going down to

Hua Hin. Outrageous and Disgraceful!

In some ways it would be a good thing if this went to court and the various groups fighting the mine clubbed together and got themselves a top notch defence team. There is so much evidence of environmental damage, damage to the health of local residents and shady involvement by military personnel and Australian and other mining interests that should be brought out into the open and aired in international forums. The downside would be the possible consequences for the girl who really shouldn't be in this position. Hopefully the Loei Juvenile Protection Centre will do its job and refuse permission to go after her in court.

I hope they do sue her, as this will be yet another nail in the coffin of these defamation laws which a major stumbling block to creating a truly free and democratic society.

The oxygen of bad publicity is what makes the governing elite's heads spin, as demonstrated all too clearly by the whines and whimpers of official protest against the latest Reuters report highlighting the evils of the Thai fishing industry.

Ok Tedi gold mine in PNG was an environmental disaster and no amount of spin can change it. An Australian gold mining companies will want no adverse publicity. And that on top of the BHP disaster in South America

Why do these companies sue? The defamation, if any, would have long being forgotten, instead they are bringing more attention to themselves, and how much money could they get from a fifteen year old girl? A casa of stupidity on the company's part.

It is always about money in Thailand. Nothing else seems to matter.

It's about loss of income these protesters have caused to the company and shareholders.X amount of grams at x amount of dollars per/hour = a mountain load.

Right or wrong i feel for the 300 employees from the village areas that no longer have jobs to support their families.

Nobody ever speaks about them.
