A truck overloaded with bricks caused a 50-meter bridge linking Sen Monorom city in Mondulkiri to a popular tourist destination in the province, Bou Sra Waterfall, to collapse at around 10 pm on Monday, provincial police said.

“The steel bridge collapsed when a local resident’s truck carrying bricks was driving across it, causing it to completely collapse,” provincial police chief Nhem Vanny said. “The level of damage is huge,” he said, adding that officials could not estimate how long it would take to repair the bridge.

The company delivering the bricks has agreed to pay compensation for destroying state property, but the cost has yet to be determined, Mr. Vanny said.

Exactly, one overloaded truck. How much can a truck be overloaded? It was a 50 meter bridge and presumably it could accommodate more than one vehicle, so a collapse seemed inevitable, just when the only thing in question.

The bridge has been likely used for decades and in dire need of repair...as are many bridges built decades ago...had an inlaw die when a bridge collapsed with him drive his pickup truck across it in the US...

Lack of serious attention to aging infrastructure is a worldwide phenomenon...
