Trump attacks publisher of largest New Hampshire newspaper
KATHLEEN RONAYNE, Associated Press

NASHUA, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire's largest newspaper, the Union Leader, is the latest target of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's attacks against the news media.

Its offense? A front-page editorial Monday by publisher Joseph McQuaid declaring, "Trump campaign insults NH voters' intelligence."

"You have a very dishonest newspaper, it's also a failing newspaper," Trump told a New Hampshire crowd Monday before going on a freewheeling tirade against the paper, McQuaid and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, whom the paper endorsed in November. Trump has frequently gone after media outlets throughout his campaign, often criticizing reporters during his rallies and on social media.

Trump is leading polls of Republican voters in New Hampshire and nationwide. The New Hampshire primary on Feb. 9 comes a week after Iowa's lead-off caucuses — and the two early voting states pose a key test for Trump who has never faced voters before.

In the editorial, McQuaid said New Hampshire voters will be smarter than to elect Trump in the state's primary.

He cited Trump's earlier claims that Sen. John McCain, who was held prisoner during the Vietnam War, is not a war hero and his comments mocking fellow Republican candidate Carly Fiorina's appearance.

"Trump has shown himself to be a crude blowhard with no clear political philosophy and no deeper understanding of the important and serious role of President of the United States than one of the goons he lets rough up protesters in his crowds," McQuaid wrote.

Trump, in response, accused McQuaid of asking him for favors in the past and mocked a Republican candidate forum hosted by the Union Leader in August, which Trump chose not to attend.

"I believe in hitting back," Trump told the crowd. "I watch this guy, and honestly, he's a loser."

Trump then alleged McQuaid told him he would never endorse Christie, because Christie was photographed hugging President Barack Obama days before the 2012 election. McQuaid called the claim "absolute garbage."

The Union Leader's endorsement gave a boost to the New Jersey governor, whose presidential hopes hinge on a strong performance in New Hampshire's primary. Trump did not spare Christie in his attacks against the paper.

"The people say: Why is he ruining New Jersey? We're a disaster state, we're going to hell and our governor's up in New Hampshire every day doing town hall meetings," Trump said.

Again. the childish "loser, loser".

Apparently it appeals to his base. A sad indictment on the intellectual calibre of his supporters.

With his sexism, racism and other bigotries, I fully expect Trump to come out with one of those "Yo mamma so fat, she gave Dracula diabetes" type jokes....and it would get laughs and more converts.

Sad.

Regrettably, the race to use "bigot" as a poison pill is frequently accompanied by a host of other indictments, each on their own demonstrating equally intolerance for the opinion of another-- Trump (by many). By definition, this is itself "bigoted." I would not race to call someone a bigot so fast. Besides it being so hackneyed as to be tired it says nothing in and of itself; its like a kid with a sticker book sticking smiles or little stars all over everything in their room. Just... sticking "bigoted" stickers/posts everywhere (many do this).

This is the predictable formula of label, indict, ridicule, repeat, repeat, repeat=gaslighting. I dislike Trump least, but dislike gaslighting more. You could cripple a man's post easily without resort to such devices.

Gaslighting?

Gaslighting is the attempt of one person to overwrite another person's reality, from the movie "Gaslight" in which the husband turns down the gas in the house to make his wife think she's crazy. Lying to people to make them them think they're nuts, manipulating others into doubting their sanity.

Trump is unbelievable. No one can touch him at out right lying on a regular basis!

I'll give you an example from the Trump play book.

Trump says of Fox News's Megyn Kelly, "She had blood coming out of her whatever" and then goes on to plead he wasn't suggesting anything untoward or mesogenic. Or how about when he says of Carly Fiorina, "Look at that face, America won't put that in the White House" and then says he wasn't commenting about her attractiveness.

Trump's campaign is an endless"Gaslight" movie. There is always an excuse. It's always a huge misunderstanding and the you're the bad guy for thinking he had other motives.

Last week it was "Hillary got shalonged." He didn't mean anything by that. He never does. It's so predictable. Say something unbelievably crass or stupid and then deny you said it. He'll do it again tomorrow.

It's all the fault of the liberal media, misinterpreting Trump's words. He never means what he says.

He's the gaslighting king!

It's fair to point out that the entire Republican platform is based on gaslighting. All the idiots claim that they're the only ones who can save America from the Islamic terrorists despite the fact that the chances of being killed by an Islamic terrorists are less than those of being killed by lightning.

Let's not confuse who is gaslighting who here. coffee1.gif

Yes, we know where gaslighting comes from. Yes, both sides do it. Yes, I think its fair to say Trump is too.

However, gaslighting is indisputably a long known tool of the left; by all accounts they perfected it. They have quite effectively employed it for a very long time. This is why up is down, left liberal, right wrong, and America a dog chasing its tail. More to this OP: Is this the best we have? Really? Trump? Is Donald Trump the best America can produce to represent such a large bloc of Americans? Trump will always be the least disliked. He will never garner legitimacy because of positive attributes, only less negative attributes.

That Trump is the best that can be mustered against a bar so unbelievably low- HRC or a socialist- says more about those who oppose the left than the left itself. The left has definitely defined itself by its disastrous policies and rampant destruction of America and the EU; no need to measure further. The right now only exists in contrast to that bar alone. Vacuous. This is why the US is always 3 steps left, 1 step right, and has inexorably moved toward the Balkanization, victimization, and Leviathan State irrespective of the wishes of most Americans.

The Left- "We will inflict our good upon you." Its "for the children." It apparently "takes a village" idiot.

The outcry of a self-created fantasy does not hold up against an excellent expository statement of analysis.

The "rampant destruction" hype is typically and characteristically OTT. The right doesn't only complain and winge, it erupts as a continuing active volcano that all around it turns life to stone.

If the right could not create enemies at home and abroad to whine about it wouldn't know what to do with itself.

If only there were a time machine so we could send the right back in it. They might even thank us for it. wink.png

It is interesting and instructive that the dominant and Republican conservative newspaper in New Hampshire rejects Trump.

The Manchester Union Leader had a history of having been borderline John Birch Society if not privately and deeply into it. In 1964 it endorsed the Republican Sen Barry Goldwater who got the nomination but only to be wiped out in the November election (by LBJ).

Now, instead of the Union Leader going with the whackjob loudmouth candidate in Trump, it is going for a more personally conservative if wisemouth eastern state Governor in Chris Christie of New Jersey. Trump and Christie, the tristate twins.

At least Gov Christie has won an election or two. Trump asks too much of the serious voter Republican or otherwise. Trump has no public budget or public policy making experience or knowledge. He's never had to ask a citizen for his/her vote in a public election.

One can criticise Christie for his seven years as governor, and many have done exactly that, but Donald Trump is an unknown in public policy decision making processes and their consequences. At least Gov. Christie knows better than to sound in public or to act and gesture like a plastered company accounts manager in his favorite burbs watering hole at 2 in the morning.

So perhaps the Union Leader believes Christie is the lesser evil between two of a kind, i.e., loudmouth earth movers. (Goldwater btw lost in New Hampshire but went on to win the nomination.)

Sorry Arj, No the left doesn't do it and they're not known for doing it (wingnut media excluded).

I can't understand most of your writing, it's so convoluted. "The left has definitely defined itself by its disastrous policies and rampant destruction of America and the EU; no need to measure further." ???? Where do you get this stuff? With all do respect, this is typical gaslighting bullshit. You're just parroting the usual Republican talking points, Obama has ruined America, etc. etc.

America is the strongest country in the world. The economy is doing well. How is that the rampant destruction of America? This is crazy wingnut gaslighting, pure and simple.

Democrats wouldn't stand for lying. They don't do that. They wouldn't stand a prayer pf getting elected to anything, lying like the Republican candidates have to do to get the base to love them.

The Republicans own gaslighting. They lie with impunity: There is no global warming. They're not trying to roll back voting rights. They want to lower taxes on the rich and the corporations because it helps everyone. Women should not have the right to decide what happens to her own body. The terrorists are coming. The immigrants are coming. Only we can save you. And on and on and on.

Republicans basically have no policy agenda. They don't want to govern. They want government to fail. The ministry of propaganda (Fox News) gaslights the right nightly. They make stuff up and the lemmings love it.

The left is the side with the normal people in it. The people who aren't pants wetting paranoid everytime they see a Muslim, which is defined as supporting terrorism is the gaslit world of the Republican party.

Gaslighting is a key component of Wingnuttia. They have to create a world where only they can save you. Creating fear is the key. Again Democrats don't do that.
