PHUKET: -- One man has died and a young woman is in hospital after a motorbike accident early this morning (Dec 30) as Phuket began it’s part in the nationwide Seven Days of Danger road-safety campaign for the New Year.

Muslim Dakan, 23, died after the motorbike he was riding slammed into a power pole by the side of Thepkrasattri Rd in front of Suan Pa Bang Kanun in Thalang at about 6am.

PHUKET: -- As the first full day of the ‘Seven Days of Danger’ road safety campaign came to a close, the goal of zero road fatalities was already dashed.

According to statistics issued by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Phuket Office, the island saw 10 road accidents on day one of the campaign, resulting in 11 injuries and the death of Pat Prayernyong, 48.

Of the 11 injured, seven were foreigners.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan last week confirmed Phuket’s zero road-deaths goal for the New Year’s road-safety campaign, which is running from December 29 through January 4 (story here).

As the sun rose on the campaign’s second day, an early morning accident claimed the life of Mutslim Dakhan, 23, and injured his passenger Appasara Suriyakanjana, 19, on Thepkrasattri Road in Thalang.

Phuket Seven Days of Danger official road toll hits two dead, 12 injured
Phuket News

PHUKET: -- The Phuket Public Health Office (PPHO) has reported that the official death and injury toll for Day 1 of the New Year Seven Days of Danger road-safety campaign stood at one dead, 11 injured.

That initial report was related to Phuket Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada at his daily update this morning (Dec 30), explained OrachonAkreerat of the PPHO.

“The first road-accident victim during this year’s New Year Seven Days of Danger campaign was Phat Prayeunyong, 48, who died after a motorbike accident on Pracha U-thit Rd in Rassada,” Ms Orachon told The Phuket News.

“At about 6:55pm yesterday evening, Mr Phat tried to avoid a driver on the wrong side of road. He slid on the road and crashed into a car and suffered serious injuries, especially his head,” she said.

“He passed away in hospital yesterday,” Ms Orachon added.

Zero road fatalities is an unachievable goal anywhere in the world let alone Thailand. It is a shame it is used as it only shows a lack of understanding by the claimant.

Normally the daily road death rate jumps significantly from the normal 20 - 30 a day up to the 40 - 50 a day at this time of year.

Any reduction on that is at least a start.

Why set a target that is going to be f***ed after the first incident? Zero sounds good but it's very much outside the control of the authorities anyway.

A target to improve on the previous year is much more viable. You don't need to quote actual numbers.

Oops, that target has just gone as well!

What part of it do you want me to show evidence for?

Last years statistics? http://www.richardbarrow.com/2015/01/full-road-accident-statistics-for-new-year-2014-2015-in-thailand/

As for Zero statistics you show me any country in the world that is close? We have not evolved to deal with the advances in technology. Accidents will happen. We can only learn from our mistakes and do our best to avoid them.
