Renewing childs British passport - 'Name and address and/or residency evidence'

I have absolutely no problem lying to a government that creates totally unnecessary procedures, cost and paperwork that they are unable to verify , basically they are lying to everyone first. There's no reason I shouldn't be able to include her passport in the application as she's Thai and doesn't need it for identification.Just checked in Somalia this would be no problem lol.

When I renewed my passport there were 3 errors on my address that I "verified" (it would never have got to me in the post) but I knew there's no way they could check the damn thing and seeing as I had to travel to Bangkok to pick it up it didn't matter anyway.

If my daughter had a Thai passport but I couldn't find it it,,,,, just saved myself 500 baht.

Anyone know how far in advance you can book an appointment at VFS for passport renewal?

Also re proof of address: has anyone tried the letter from the school route as my daughter doesn't have an ID card. Of course it might be easier to just get the ID card.

Try three dates/times and see, worst is they say tat they cannot take a booking that far in advance.

Can't remember exactly how long ahead but afaicr a month is ok.

If you are applying on behalf of your child then it's your name/address that need affirmation - a school report with your child's name at your affirmed address will be fine.

Does anyone have a phone number to contact Liverpool directly? I am having problems with proof of address.

See this exchange of correspondence:-

I am assisting a friend with his renewal passport application. Everything is OK except for evidence of address.

He has no correspondence of any sort sent to his home address. He is retired so there is no employer to write a confirmation letter.

Can I ask if the following is acceptable:-

He lives with his wife and I have in mind preparing a letter of certification (in English) that he he lives with her at the stated address. She can sign and also sign a copy of her Thai ID card and her blue 'house book' - these also can be translated into English.

This is usually sufficient evidence for Thai immigration and, in any event, the renewal passport will be sent to VFS Bangkok and not to the home address.

I would appreciate your comments.

Dear Mr XX

Thank you for your email.

If the applicant is not able to supply any evidence in her name, the method you suggest is acceptable as proof of address.

For any further information, please contact us through our helpline on +44 (0)300 123 1973 or via e-mail [email protected]

Please ensure the application reference number is included in any email correspondences sent to us.

Kind Regards,

Lawrence

Note - I later used a translated ID card, with the certification written on, and this was accepted.

Thanks Jip99, I submitted my 3 children's applications last week but have had an email saying "you did not enclose all necessary supporting documents". This is in regard to only one child which I don't understand as all the applications were identical. I submitted translated copies of blue book entries as proof of address but I think they are asking for my proof of address. Need to clarify with them.

After phoning Liverpool today I have just received an apologetic email from them. Apparently they have now found the address evidence in the file and the application has been passed. Thanks Jip99 for the phone number. Problem solved.

For my son's British passport application I submitted his British "style" birth certificate issued by the embassy in Bangkok. This document looks very similar to what you get back in the UK. Unfortunately HMPO do not accept these as I found out this morning. So today I have had to post his Thai birth certificate with translation to Liverpool. I hope this information helps anyone just starting the application process.

That's ridiculous. 6 years ago I had to go through the process of getting one of these before the Embassy would issue a passport.

My daughter's new passport will be a renewal so this won't be a required document anyway but the current rules and regulations are getting a bit onerous and over-bureaucratic to say the least. Whatever happened to environmental policies? Why full colour copies of every page of one or even two passports for a renewal? Copies of all documentation? What happens to it after it's used? Stored or shredded?

So annoying that they wouldn't let me renew her passport in London last year when I renewed mine because she wasn't there, despite having completed all the documentation and having the photos signed by an authorised individual.

6 years ago was also when I applied but chose not to get the passport as we didn't plan to travel. Now it seems I have an expensive piece of paper that is of no use!

Just received an email from the Passport Office in Liverpool. My daughter's application went in last week. This is what it says:

Thank you for your recent passport application.

Please send a letter from the mother of the child named above confirming that she agrees to a passport being issued to ***. She should write 'mother' print her name after her signature and date her reply.

I've posted this partly as a heads-up to anyone renewing or applying for a child's passport but also as a rant against the ridiculous amount of red tape in what should be a straightforward process. It even seems like they want a letter posted as the've even sent a label for the envelope, but I'll try scanning first and see what they say. What is so annoying is that there is nothing mentioned about this on the guidance notes, nor did they ask for it at VFS, where her mother was sitting downstairs and could have written the letter there and then. It's a renewal and this type of request is just so unnecessary and bloody annoying.

How old is your daughter, does she live at your address and are you married to her mother?

Reason for these questions being that in the application notes under parental responsibility HMPO state that:

If the child’s parents are not married, the mother can give permission. The father can sometimes give permission but usually only if he:

• has a parental responsibility order or agreement (which must be sent with the application)

• has a residency order

• is named on the birth certificate (which must be sent with the application), and the birth was jointly registered on or after:

- 15 April 2002 in Northern Ireland

- 1 December 2003 in England and Wales, or

- 4 May 2006 in Scotland.

It's a renewal. I supplied the birth certificate where I am named for the first passport. Not required for the renewal. Not a major problem, letter scanned and sent already, but just an annoyance.

Agreed that the original birth certificate is not required for a renewal, however the current passport application guidelines that I quoted earlier (which were introduced in August 2013) apply for renewals as well.

When you applied for your daughter's first passport, I suspect that it was prior to 08/13 and thus you would have been dealing with a different government department (Foreign Office) and their guidelines at the time.
