Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha leads members of his Cabinet, their spouses and state officials to offer food to monks at Government House to mark the start of the new year.

BANGKOK: -- FOR THE NEW YEAR, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has resolved to make more visits to rural areas to hear first-hand from grass-roots people.

The government is attempting to open up two-way communication channels with the people, Maj-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd, government spokesman, said after yesterday's Cabinet meeting.

Prayut hopes more field trips will keep him in direct touch with local people, besides the usual propaganda from the government side.

The prime minister also urges more well-rounded media consumption from people, Sansern said.

"There are analyses that this year will be tough for us," he said.

"But if people use their discretion to listen openly to all parties, they will know what the government has done and what is actually distorted. With that, we will be able to pass all those predicted crises."

The prime minister will reduce his talking role this year, with more explanations to be given by his deputies, ministers and their spokesmen.

To comply with the new communication strategy, the Cabinet wants all ministries to reconsider their spokesmen by seeking qualified officials for the post. The officials must gain approval from the Cabinet and be recommended by their ministers.

The ministries can consider keeping their current spokesmen. There could also be spokesmen for special clusters or working groups.

Deputy prime ministers are supposed to elaborate more on the progress of their work during Cabinet meetings.

Prayut ordered all government agencies to practise 2016 frameworks in the hope of solving the country's problems.

The frameworks will consist of general functions as well as reform work to be completed in various lengths - completely done within this government's term, partly done and prepared as bases for the next government to continue.

The frameworks will also include work on urgent agendas such as illegal fishing and aviation standards, and work to steer important activities, for instance, support for the 10 economic clusters and the management of water and forest resources.

The prime minister, his deputies and ministers will practise in detail all four work agendas.

All agendas are expected to be carried out simultaneously with clear objectives and the ability to produce obvious, evaluated outcomes, Sansern said.

To hear first hand from grass roots people !

Will that be carefully selected grass people or does he believe that ordinary people will really speak their mind knowing how criticism is viewed and what can happen to those that do tell it like it is ?

Presumably they will be relaxing their internet censorship so that all parties can openly be listened to, New York Times, Asia Correspondent, Post Intelligencer, The Age, Thailand Political Prisoners, wikileaks, Daily Mail...........on second thoughts, continue blocking the Daily Mail

And this is something that you though of after 20 months in power? I see we are dealing with an astounding intellect here!

Interesting thought, what would be the immediate reaction and then the follow up if the PM inadvertently met someone who gave him both barrels and with the media in attendance ?

"Prayut hopes more field trips will keep him in direct touch with local people, besides the usual propaganda from the government side". Did the spokesman really say this?

I looked up the definition propaganda:

Merriam-Webster says:
ideas or statements that are often false or exaggerated and that are spread in order to help a cause, a political leader, a government, etc.

On second thought it makes sense the army spokesman actually said it.

The media would be told not to report it and his (verbal) assailant would disappear.

But it probably won't happen, both the media and the public know the score.

Apart from anything else I'd imagine some on his staff, local officials would cop it for allowing an embarrassing situation to happen especially if he couldn't handle what was said and lost it.

I have a lovely vision of him being collared by a little old lady and it all gong downhill fast. biggrin.pnggigglem.gif C'mon I'm allowed to dream.

Yeah..........no. You military guys are not really cut out for this.

Cmon up to Khon Kaen. Maybe you can arrange for some photo ops. Smiling 8-year olds will sing your praises. Your glum faced retinue will take notes, earnestly.

Just dont expect any roses. They're fresh out.

And the result/fallout if a Thai speaking, educated, articulate foreigner were to do it, while wearing a small webcasting camera?

I'd prefer he didn't. He came by our village in the North. The motorcade lasted about 5 minutes. I couldn't keep track of the number of cars and vans that screamed by on our narrow village road. I wonder how much each of his 'visits' cost the Thai taxpayers.

Expulsion. Quite likely followed by significant repercussions on other foreigners living here.

The expulsion of westerners doesn't come up much.

The preventive measures of such events ( of confrontation ) by Thais is punishment knowledge .

Family persecution . ( a teenagers parents would be blamed)

An elderly woman's son .

A mothers daughter.

These sinister junta operators have made known their mode of application from day one.

But a westerner who may have nil interest in being banned from there , is female young speaks Thai and perhaps streaming live to the world ( possibly a journalist and hardcore educated feminist with a big ego and axe to grid)

Could in fact wound the Junta harshly.

An Australian ABC reporter ( a woman who fits this bill) took him on last year at a press conference .

He subsequently banned local TV from showing it.

But it was played in many western countries.

He really didn't know what to do with an in your face journalist.

I suspect his thugs would arrest her mid sentence and trump up charges like she had a gun .

Or she confesses to wanting to lie about him and is also on drugs charges.

Basically unless your an international journalist beyond reproach it would be twisted , distorted and shot down , banned.

But eventually human rights groups will travel to the country and try and embarrass this guy.

I hope next trip to the states people take issue.

Certainly within Thailand the risks are so high for a citizen to confront him it would take a brave soul willing to die.

That's then likely outcome for anyone who dares.

Who isn't afraid of death you mighty ask?

Well those guys are reportedly in the nation too .

According to Russian intel....maybe they are waiting for a big fish to fry?

But one thing is sure up north he is not going to be as secure as the south.( Bangkok)

There are bound to be one or two psychos with grenades ripped on Chang who hate his guts

Expulsion amounts to rather a lot if you are a westerner who has made their life here, and has a Thai wife and child.

The sort of confrontation you suggest would undoubtedly catch the attention of the western media, but for how long? Frankly it would be the "and finally" item on news bulletins.

Attempted assassination would unleash a wave of oppression and violence which no one living here with Thai family could possibly wish to see.

No, I suspect that I know what lies behind your thoughts, but this regime must go as a result of the Thai people's actions, however they choose ( or are forced) to do so. Foreign involvement or activists would absolutely not help.

Not to mention all the yahoos driving around Bangkok everyday. Sometimes it seems like each govt employee gets their own motorcade.
