Thai indie films to screen in Rotterdam

BANGKOK: -- Two Thai films will be screening in competition in the upcoming International Film Festival Rotterdam, which this year runs from to January 27 to February 7 in the Dutch port city.

Pimpaka Towira's second film "Maha Samut Lae Susaan" ("The Island Funeral") has been selected for the festival's main "Bright Future" programme while the other is by wellknown writer Prabda Yoon, whose directorial debut "Motel Mist" will be in the Hivos Tiger Awards competition.

One of the jury members for this year's Tiger Award will be director Anocha Suwichakornpong, whose directorial debut "Mundane History" won the award six years ago.

The Rotterdam festival has long been an important landmark for Thai independent cinema, which gave the Tiger Award to Aditya Assarat's "Wonderful Town" in 2008, Anocha in 2010 and Sivaroj Kongsakul's "Eternity" in 2011. Last year Jakrawal Nilthamrong's "Vanishing Point" won the Tiger Award together with two other films.
