Commerce Min keeps 41 products on price control list

BANGKOK, 7 January 2015 (NNT) – The central committee on prices of goods and services under the Ministry of Commerce has resolved to keep 41 items under its price control while product prices this year are expected to stay at the same levels as in 2015.

After chairing this year’s first meeting of the central committee on prices of goods and services, Commerce Minister Apiradee Tantraporn said among the issues discussed were the regulation of product prices, price trends, assistance measures for consumers and the development of community markets. She said the committee laid stress on vendors’ cooperation in using packaging that is appropriate for the size of the product and clearly displaying prices to customers.

As for the review of the price control list, which previously contained 41 products and services, the central committee agreed to keep the list unchanged. The listed items comprise those under various categories, such as food, consumer products, agricultural materials, construction materials, transport equipment, petroleum products and medicines.

The committee is also ready to review the list of products and services under close monitoring. The decisions on both lists will be submitted to the Cabinet for approval next week.

Ms Apiradee gave assurances that the Commerce Ministry will continue to ensure fairness in product pricing. As operators have affirmed they are not intent on adjusting their prices any time soon, the minister expressed confidence that product prices will remain rather stable this year.

Seems like nobody want to speak about the big white elephant in the room....

Price control list??

What happened to free market powers?

With the AEC there should be a lot of things actually going down in price.

There should with AEC be 0% import tax on nearly everything between AEC countries, meaning a lot of goods from 1 of Jan 2016 should be cheaper to buy.......

I know it is actually a unheard concept for a Thai to lower the price, but this is what should happen......

Parallel import should be booming in these days....

Agreed, prices should be going down. But the lower import costs, are kept by the importer,

Thai's never lower prices. They just reduce the portion sizes.

I think its high time something was done about the price of goods in the supermarkets some items appear to be going up in price on a weekly basis and no reasons are given for doing so there has to be regulation to satisfy the majority of people.

Continued price controls - irrelevant.

2016-01-05:

"The Ministry of Commerce’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office director Somkiat Trirattanaphan disclosed that the Consumer Price Index in December 2015 amounted to 105.74, accounting for a 0.39 percent decrease largely due to the lowered domestic retail prices of fuel, fresh vegetables, fruits, pork and eggs.

That marked a 0.9 percent decrease in the inflation in December 2015, the lowest in six years since 2009 while the consumer price index rose by 0.68 percent. The Trade Policy and Strategy Office has predicted that the inflation in 2016 will grow in a range of 1 and 2 percent."

The Thai economy is had "negative inflation for eight continuous months - that is a recession. The most likely price increases will be from imports (not covered by the Goods and Services Price Control Act of 1999) as the baht continues to lose value against exporting countries, except maybe with the yuan that is experiencing another reduction against the USD.

Reality check in aisle 7 please. They are NOT interested in satisfying the majority of the people only the rich elite you know the upper class that knows nothing about the price of things and really does not care. Let the peasants eat humble pie. As good old Leona H said "The rich don't pay taxes"
