No shutdown of learning centres

BANGKOK: The government won't shut down any learning centre but instead will upgrade them with even more advanced technology.
This was assured by deputy prime minister ACM Prajin Juntong during an interview National News Bureau of Thailand (NNT)

NNT said ACM Prajin denied earlier report that learning centres would be closed, insisting that they would instead be upgraded and equipped with even more advanced technologies.

ACM Prajin disclosed the government’s plan to raise the standard of discovery museums which serve as learning centres across Thailand to be on par with those in other countries.

He confirmed that no museum closures are in the plan, but rather there will be major improvements, especially in terms of exhibit contents and technologies employed.

The deputy premier voiced belief that the positive changes will attract more Thai children to the museums to learn about their own culture.

Meanwhile, Mr Rames Promyen, director of the National Discovery Museum Institute, conceded that Thai discovery museums have not gained enough recognition from youths.

Therefore, it is crucial to make improvements in a bid to make visitors’ experience at the museums even more fun and interesting than before.

At present, there are 1,417 discovery museums nationwide. They are open from 10 am to 6 pm daily, except on Mondays.

"At present, there are 1,417 discovery museums nationwide."

But for the Thai youth there are probably well over 300,000 internet game shops nationwide to hang out in.

Officials in Thailand occupy a strange parallel universe, in which Thai "youths" would be expected to locate and travel to museums to "learn about their own culture".

Really guys? Have you observed any Thai children recently?

It's likely you could close all the museums, and replace them with a web site, a Facebook page, two smartphone apps, and a little social media promotion, and get a better "learning" return on your investment.

Enough with the culture and nationalistic rubbish,

They're taught that they are number one but they are dirt poor while the stupid farrang have all the money. Poor bstds haven't figured it out yet.

Did somebody mention museums. Most of the classrooms I have seen are like museums.

My mother attended a very rural school in the 1920's. The school was in the middle of nowhere and I and a cousin used to sneak in through the coal shut in the basement. Other than the dust, it looked a lot like many of the classrooms I've seen in Thailand, a chalkboard, some chalk and few books. There was even the occasional rat.

You are missing the point - the Youth does not care about Discovery Museums. However the overworked Thai teachers will be able to use them as yet another excuse to miss a day of teaching in class.

By the way they are very proud of the fact that the Planetarium and discovery museum at Ekkamai has been renovated, and some of the hands-on exhibits are actually working at the moment....

As children aren't required to carry ID cards,

How would the museum know who was Thai and who wasn't?

(Note: lots of halfies who can't speak Thai)

I attended a 1 room school with 1 teacher and 8 grades. At the conclusion of the 8 year we were bused 20 mile to attend 4 year of school (highschool) The majority of the highschool students were from similar situations. Our classes in highschool averaged 30 plus in number and I do not remember anyone failing a class/grade due to being behind the townkids, from our 1 room education. We had some kids who dropped out but it was normally due to economic reasons.

About half started college or a tech school education and most of us finished. Our 1 room school had a victrolia and a teacher who insteaded we all listen to music, from classical to modern for 30 minutes 3 times a week. Each morning started with news headlines local, national, and international with maps displayed and used as part of learning. I wonder how many Thai are exposed to this type of school which was considered poor even while it was being used 70 years ago?

I wasn't missing the point. The article quoted an official who was missing the point....which is that the "youths" are likely disinterested, just like children everywhere. It's up to parents and teachers to drag the children to the museums. At which point, learning might happen.

However it takes talent and money to create museums that are not just "dusty and out of date". A tall order for Thailand.

I do. He didn't use that term. He used a perjorative racist term in English, when many other terms are available.
