ACU to Dismantle Illegal Checkpoints along Roads

The Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) plans to remove illegal checkpoints along roads throughout Cambodia in an effort to curb instances of officials demanding bribes.

The move, which was announced in a meeting last Friday, will begin taking effect in Kandal, Prey Veng and Kep provinces as well as in Phnom Penh, ACU president Om Yien Teang said yesterday. ACU officials will meet with officials in those locations to discuss and work on the new campaign.

The decision was made amid a press by the national police to strengthen its enforcement of the traffic law, which will possibly require the installation of new, official checkpoints along roads, especially those in the provinces.

Mr. Yien Teang said that the ACU campaign would not affect the national police’s enforcement of traffic laws.
