EU officials arrive to evaluate IUU fishing situation

BANGKOK, 19 January 2016 (NNT) – The government affirmed progress in its crackdown on illegal fishing, as it prepares for an evaluation by EU officials this week.

Government Spokesperson Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd reported that the government is ready for the inspection. EU officials have arrived to evaluate Thailand’s measures to combat illegal fishing from now until January 21. The spokesperson affirmed that the government is making a sincere effort to tackle the problems that plague the fisheries industry.

Maj Gen Sansern explained that there are five solutions being implemented, which include drafting legislation to regulate fisheries, overhauling the monitoring system for fishing activities, expediting the prosecution of human trafficking in the industry, extending cooperation with other countries, and helping fishing operators and workers to change their profession and allocate fishing zones.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has said that the results of the evaluation are beyond the government’s control. He added that the EU’s decision will not affect his administration’s continued efforts to tackle illegal fishing and foster sustainable fishing practices.

Step 1; Hand out the woollen blindfolds.....

Step 2 : Don't forget how your Big Corporations became so, and how they're backing you.

Nothing will change/happen.

EU team visits Thailand to assess fishing industry cleanup
BY PRACHA HARIRAKSAPITAK

BANGKOK: -- A European Union delegation that is visiting Thailand to weigh its progress in battling illegal and unregulated fishing will not make a decision this week on whether to ban Thai seafood products, the government said on Tuesday.

Thailand, the world's third-largest exporter of seafood, faces the risk of the ban after the European Union gave it a "yellow card" in April for failing to clamp down on problems in its fishing industry.

An EU dialogue mission to assess progress is set for Thursday and Friday but a technical team has already arrived, the government said.

EU officials arrive to evaluate. They will only see what the government allows them to see.

They should have arrived secretly. That is the only way it could be done properly.

I am sure they don't want to issue a report while they are still in Thailand, Thailand may try to charge them with computer crimes if they gave a negative report.

Let's hope the E.U.officials can see thru' the verbal bull that they're about to hear where ever they go & from whoever they meet.

A meeting with Mr Hall prior to meeting any Thais may arm them with some direct questions to ask the Thai authorities over specific areas/topics known to be linked to Human Rights issues here.

But alas we all know this visit will be sugar-coated from beginning to end.

"expediting the prosecution of human trafficking in the industry"

New laws, regulations, procedures, arrests and prosecutions in 2014 and 2015 have been impressive compared to all previous years, albeit without a conviction of any of the five mid-to high-level military officers (one navy and four army).

If the Junta as Head of Government wants to show it's serious about equal justice for human traffickers, it needs to get convictions of its accused armed forces and allow an independent investigation into the culture of the ISOC that seems to have spawned human trafficking activities in the South. If the Junta is perceived to use its absolute power to protect itself from recrimination of human trafficking, its double standard of convicting civilian traffickers may be viewed as mere window dressing.
