DDPM urges provincial authorities to use 'civil state' mechanism to tackle drought crisis

BANGKOK, 19 January 2016 (NNT) – Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation chief Chatchai Promlert has instructed provincial authorities, especially in the upper northern and upper northeastern regions, to prepare to tackle imminent water shortages.

Such preparations are calling for systematic water management and water distribution plans so that local villagers will have enough water for consumption during dry season or in times of a drought crisis in 2016, according to the department's director general.

Meanwhile, the "civil state" mechanism will be applied to create public awareness and understanding about the current water situation, water distribution plans and measures to prevent and solve the water shortage problems.

All government sectors have been suggested to set plans for water uses and to use water sparingly while farmers have been advised to refrain from growing extra crops of rice and turn to short-lived plants which need a relatively little volume of water.

I hope everyone's getting rain. It's been pouring bucket loads at my place for the past 6 hours.

But where is your place?

I am in rural Khampaeng Phet and it hasn't rained in 5 weeks.
