HAITI -- Electoral violence has erupted in Haiti as opposition supporters demand the suspension of the January 24 presidential election.

Tension is high after opposition candidate Jude Celestin pulled out of the second round amid alleged irregularities:

Protests targeting election offices occured not only in the capital Port-au-Prince, but also in the more provincial north.

The first round was won by ruling party candidate Jovenal Moise and the UN has urged the vote to go ahead on schedule to have a new leader installed by February 7.

Haiti is racked by poverty it is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest countries in the developing world.
