BANGKOK: -- After the temperature drastically dropped in Bangkok and upper Thailand yesterday, a woman was found dead from the cold in the northeastern province of Nakhon Phanom.

Following the 9 degree Celsius temperature in Issan, Buala Kamhen, 93, was found dead by her grandson yesterday after she was left alone at home while he went to work.

The grandson Nopporn said his grandmother had always been healthy until the last two days when she constantly complained of being cold. She was staying indoors and wrapped up in a blanket when he left for work.

Sharp fall in temperatures claims five deaths

BANGKOK: -- The bizarre atmospheric conditions now hitting most parts of the country has claimed five deaths.

The first known victim dying from coldness in such weird weather was reported in Samut Prakarn province.

The man, identified as Wila Nakthongdee, was found dead in his Bang Plee rented room.

Neighbours spotted his semi naked body and they believed he had fallen asleep without his clothing because he had been drinking and succumbed to the extreme cold.

The second victim is Wichien Likhidsuphin.

He was reported to have a heart condition and due to the sudden drop in temperature caused him to lose all strength in his limbs.

Relatives of the 38-year-old man rushed him on board a long-tailed boat intending to take him to hospital but he died on the way.

Two elderly persons in Chai Nat province also succumbed to the extreme drop in temperature in the same night.

The body of 72 year old woman Jamrat Yodpetch was discovered wearing only a sarong and one thin shirt and it was reported that she had been drinking earlier with her husband.

Authorities said that she had succumbed to the extreme cold because she was not wearing any warm clothing.

The second elderly person who died in Chai Nat province as a result of the frigid weather was 68 year old Samphan Phengkhan.

Samphan had a heart condition and was also afflicted with asthma. He was found dead in his bedroom probably due to lack of warmth.

Another elderly person also succumbed to the cold in Prachinburi province after temperatures plummeted to 14 degrees Celsius.

The 96 old mother was reported going into shock in her home before finally dying, her frail body unable to withstand the cold.

Meanwhile the National Institute of Emergency Medicine yesterday issued a warning to all residents in rural areas to temporarily desist from consuming alcohol to stave off the cold.

It stated that consuming large amounts of alcohol in extreme cold cause the human body to rapidly lose heat causing bodily temperatures to drop below normal levels.

Consuming alcohol and then going to sleep while being exposed to such extreme temperatures could result in death.

A Singaporean cargo vessel founders Monday evening just off the coast of Narathiwat province.

BANGKOK — The recent cold snap and turbulent weather are being blamed for the deaths of six deaths in the north and sinking ships in the south.

While the temperature was slightly higher Tuesday in Bangkok, the cold spell remained in the north and northeast of Thailand, where an elderly woman, two men and three people were found dead in three Isaan provinces of Nakhon Phanom, Bueng Kan and Sakhon Nakhon, where temperatures fell as low as 5C.

Low temperatures were also blamed for the death of a 58-year-old disabled man in Loei province and a man found dead in Udon Thani along a road. Police said he died after passing out from drinking too much.

The headline should read that people died from alcohol, not cold weather. The people who can stay sober and keep their clothes on seem to be doing an okay job of not dying when it's 15 degrees out.

Somehow strange. Thailands usual temperature is aroud 35 degrees and drops to 15 degrees... people die.

In my country it is usually 25 degrees and can drop to minus 20 degrees. .... Whats the point????

It is still not cold in Thailand.

You have to factor in the humidity, it makes even a small drop in temperature feel a lot colder than in Europe.

Yeah, like those arid deserts like England and the Netherlands. It never feels too cold there to get drunk and strip off your clothes and fall asleep outside, it's the lack of humidity.

You are can't be Canadian then? A usual temperature of 25C dropping to - 20C is massive.

Which country has these swings of temp?

Not all the above cases mentioned alcohol, like the man with the heart problem and asthma, or the lady in here nineties.

Unfortunately not everyone is as tough as you, and people with certain health problems will always be vulnerable in such conditions.

Yet another one of the anti alcohol brigade I see. Boring.

I have experienced +50C and -18C in the same place in Iraq.

Meanwhile there have been 2 deaths due to cold (and no alcohol involved) in our village over the last 3 days but these seem not to be in the reports.

I'm not anti-alcohol, I like alcohol, just not in massive quantities that make you want to go outside naked when it's cold.

In two of the five deaths, alcohol was not mentioned, but in 60%, it was. The National Institute of Emergency Medicine issued warnings about trying to keep warm using alcohol but I guess they're some anti-alcohol brigade too...

If alcohol is involved in over half the cases, what's the issue with a headline that says "Combination of cold temps and alcohol cause deaths in Thailand"?

In my village in the north many of the houses aren't much more than shacks... and many aren't prepared for the cold. A plank of wood provides no insulation. .. its the same temp inside as it is outside... I'm sure many will drink due to the cold in an effort to feel warm... even if it might kill them

If there was ever an excuse to burn tires, not that there is, but I mean rather than just to anger me that they all seem to take such delight in wherever I go in Thailand, wouldn't this be that time? I'll bet if they didn't like kicking dogs for no reason, they'd all be alive, but unfortunately they do also love kicking dogs all the time, so they won't be able to save them from the cold wither. I wonder if this lot left the fans on maximum when they were freezing to keep off mosquitoes?

Seriousness continued, I wonder how many people died in car accidents rushing to get out of the Arctic conditions?
