Sonthi says Thaksin did not seek permission to return

Gen Sonthi Boonyaratglin, leader of the Council for National Security, said former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra did not contact him to seek permission to return to Thailand.

He said he believed Thaksin would not seek to return to the kingdom in the near future.

Sonthi said he believed Thaksin would not travel to China to meet Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont, who was attending a China-Asean summit there, either.

There will be unrest if he does a comeback unannounced without consulting the people in charge at this end. It's a gamble, an idea he probably has and still considers but that would definitely hurt his popularuty rating even more if things went wrong.

It is unlikely he will risk returning while martial law is in place. He will no doubt have to wait this one out as there is little he can do about martial law. It is also unlikely he will return unless he is fully aware of potential charges against him as well as the evidnce and who if any from the previous government have spilled the dirt. No doubt he is actively trying to ascertain the latter right now and no doubt the government are trying to keep that quiet. Leaks and statements making it to the media on potential court issues may well not characterize the cases as they really stand.

And finally we should not totally rule out a deal that will see only limited or no cases brought even if there is evidence.

Thaksin in Beijing, failing to meet Surayud

Ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra flied to China to seek a meeting with Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont but failed to meet him so he stayed in Beijing now, it was reported.

Matichon reported quoting a Government House source as saying that Thaksin went to China on Tuesday and tried to arrange a meeting with Surayud but Surayud declined to meet him. A wise decision.

The source said Thaksin then went to Beijing and stayed there for a vacation and golf playing.

Nation TV Thursday quoted Gen Sonthi Boonyaratglin, leader of the Council for National Security, as confirming that Thaksin is in Beijing now.

Thai PM willing to meet with ousted Thaksin

BANGKOK - Thailand's military-installed Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said Tuesday he was willing to hold talks with Thaksin Shinawatra if the exiled former premier wanted to arrange a formal meeting.

"If there were a formal arrangement to meet me, I am not stubborn person. I am always open for talks, but so far there has been no such contact," Surayud told reporters after returning from a regional summit in Nanning, China.

"I want to repeat that I am ready and open for discussions," he said.

Thaksin was in New York for the UN General Assembly when the military toppled his government on September 19. Since then, he has been living in self-imposed exile in London.

Surayud said Thaksin had only contacted him once to request permission to return home.

"He must be very prudent. I am convinced that he will not yet return at this time," junta leader General Sonthi Boonyaratglin said earlier Tuesday.

Sonthi Boonyaratglin (สนธิ บุญรัตกลิน),the Chairman of the Council for National Security (CNS), revealed that ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is now in the People’s Republic of China, after departing from England. On the issue of when will Pol. Lt. Col. Thaksin return to Thailand, Gen. Sonthi replied that this question could be answered by Gen. Surayud Chulanont, the current Prime Minister.

Moreover, he mentioned that if former Prime Minister Thaksin would to come back to Thailand, he must contact the government directly, and the CNS does not have any authority on this issue. Gen. Sonthi confirmed that the CNS will not follow the move of Pol. Lt. Col. Thaksin because he thinks it is the Ministry of Foreign Affair’s task to report his movement to the government and Prime Minister Surayud.

In keeping with his grandiose self-image, it was rather presumptious of him to fly all the way to China unannounced and expect the PM to meet him. He looks very embarrassed now having been rejected and with the PM returning to Thailand while he’s left hanging out to dry in China. Quite a bruise to his inflated ego.

Deposed Thai PM Thaksin may return to politics

BANGKOK - Deposed Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, now in Beijing, will return home after martial law is lifted and may re-enter politics under a planned new constitution, his lawyer said on Thursday.

Noppadon Patama said the ousted billionaire telecoms tycoon had flown to China from London, where he has been since the September 19 coup, to "rest and meet friends" and had no immediate plans to return to his homeland.

"He will return to Thailand when it is the right time, when martial law is lifted," Noppadon, a British-educated lawyer, told reporters. "He will consider returning to politics when the constitution is written up."

Earlier on Thursday, coup leader and army chief Sonthi Boonyaratglin, who has made clear Thaksin would not be welcome in Thailand any time soon, said the issue of his return would be in the hands of the interim government.

"If he wants to come back to Thailand he has to contact the government, not the Council for National Security," Sonthi said.

The legal consultant to ousted PM insists that Dr. Thaksin does not request for a meeting with PM in China

Mr. Noppadol Pattama (นพดล ปัทมะ), a legal consultant to the former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has insisted that Pol. Lt-Col. Thaksin does not travel to China to call for a meeting with Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont.

He affirmed that the ex-prime minister does not request for a meeting with the General Surayud, who will join the Asean-China Summit in Nanning. He said that Pol. Lt-Co. Thaksin has traveled to China after the premier had arrived in Thailand. Mr. Noppadol also said that Pol. Lt-Col. Thaksin will not return to Thailand at this moment.

As for doubts raised against the land purchase by Khunying Potjaman Shinawatra (พจมาน ชินวัตร), the ex-prime minister’s wife, he affirmed that the purchase was conducted with transparency. He said that the bidding price proposed by Khunying Potjaman was 20 million baht higher than the second bidder.

So he flew to China, of all countries, hoping to meet with the Thai PM, unannounced but says he went there only to meet friends. That's exactly why he should never be allowed into politics again, he will never change, a compulsive liar, always doing things his way, even when walking on thin ice. Had he been successful at meeting the PM privately, he would have been the first one to publicly denounce it in order to try and destroy the people's confidence back in his own country where he isn't welcomed.

Let him rot.

taksin as a thai national and yet to be charged for any counts of fraud by the new government should be able to come back to thailand.

and how about every other government of the last 70 years in thailand, will they be charged for corruption, mismanagment of the countries assets?

i did not realize that so many people on this post believe what they read in the media right now as being the absolute gospel, as anyone actually heard of the word propaganda on this thread.

if the law courts can find taksin guilty. fine arrest the man, if not then allow the man to return.
