BANGKOK: In an effort to boost tourism revenue, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) says it will promote Chinese New Year celebration in Thailand an international event with 13 provinces across the country hosting the celebrations.

The Chinese New Year festival will begin next week.

According to TAT News, the 13 provinces where celebration of the important day of the Chinese are Bangkok, Nakhon Sawan, Suphan Buri, Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, Chonburi, Ayutthaya, Trang, Songkhla, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Udonthani.

The celebration will start from February 5-15.

TAT Deputy Governor for Tourism Products and Business Mr Visanu Jaroensilp said the events are expected to generate some 15 billion baht mainly from foreign visitors.

He said TAT plans to make the Chinese New Year celebration in Thailand an international event.

According to the TAT, visitors can enjoy Chinese culture exhibitions, cultural displays and grand dragon parades during the celebrations.

A total of 108 Chinese acrobats have been invited to perform the cultural and fun activities.

Among the 13 provinces where grand celebration will be held, Udon Thani in the Northeast is ready to welcome visitors.

Udon Thani Governor Chayawut Chanthorn said highlight for this year event will be a street food festival.

He said a one-kilometer-long street will be turned to a food street where hundreds of stalls will sell Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese food.

Apart from food, there will also be Vietnamese cultural displays because Udon Thani province has the highest number of Vietnamese Thai population in the country.

He said since the Vietnamese New Year and the Chinese New Year are celebrated in the same period, local authorities therefore decide to host an event to celebrate the two special New Years at the same time.

In Trang, visitors can also enjoy the famous Chinese rice cakes (Khanom Kheng) of Trang province.

Rice cakes from this southern province are made of brown sugar, which make them unique.

They are also taller than normal rice cakes. These rice cakes are steamed for a day to create beautiful smell.

More importantly, they are delicious, a TAT official said.

For the Chinese, rice cakes symbolize prosperity.

The Chinese New Year 2016 Feb 8th is celebrated as Tet in Vietnam on the same date.

But why stop there? Jewish NY Rosh Hashana, Oct 3-4, Islam's Muharram at the same time. Everybody gets a happy ending and a happy new year

Thailand thinks they own it. But the real story here is that the holiday is less than a week away and TAT is planning to promote it internationally. Hey TAT, that is not a plan, it is an afterthought. And a late one at that.
