BANGKOK, 2 February 2016 (NNT) – Tourism and Sports Minister Korbkarn Wattanawarangkura said the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has designed to promote Thailand's tourism industry with the use of digital technology.

The "Tourist Gateway Project" will see cooperation in collecting tourism information from agencies across the country which will be made available to tourists as electronic data from a central platform.

That is to allow visitors to Thailand to have access to online information as the first phase of the tourism platform which will be effective within 2016 at 19 tourist destinations throughout the country.

Sounds like the World Wide Web to me, welcome to the 20th century !

What is the point of it? No one believes the numbers TAT ever quotes anyway!

A day late and a dollar short

Her eyes always tells another story ?

Her eyes always tells another story ?

James Bond would agree with that comment.

No wonder the numbers regarding tourism are always a bit sketchy: up until now they've been using abacuses ;)

BS at the press of a button, perfect.

Why not create data digitally.

They have been " creating" it manually for years...

I really haven't a clue what they are proposing here. Usual wonderful English language reporting by the National News Bureau.

Yes, very drole, but so true!

I notice the same story in the BKK Post, they quote that of 270,000 hotels nationwide, 83% still do not have any "computer-based" services.

We had some relatives from Finland staying with us recently. One of them was looking for someone locally selling ball bearings, for him to export back home. He tried an online search, which unsurprisingly found no companies listed at all. The only result was via a local online forum, where there had been discussion about the same subject, and some suggestions of where to try. Someone else did make the comment that to find information locally, you would need to ask a ferang, rather than a Thai.

I asked my g/f and her sister why they think Thai businesses just don't seem interested in promoting themselves on the net, especially as the Thais just love their smartphones now. They just seem to think small businesses would be reluctant to "waste" money on a website.

(Unfortunately from my observation, most Thais only seem to use the net only for things like Candy Crush and Facebook).

little bit late I think.....everybody uses "lonely Planet", "facebook", "Tripadvisor" and other social media even in the plane before landing...

It's after the landing, once those pesky websites have been censored and sued for libel, when you'll need Thailand's version of reality.

Lonely Planet's digital version was selling recently for less than US$10. Far superior to anything Facebook or Trip Advisor have

Even big Thai company's or university's don't even use their websites properly, they prefer Facebook.

Also they don't write anything in english and translators don't work well on thai language.

Even when you send email to a multinational in Thailand you won't get reply, no speak english krab....

Yes that's costing them money for missed orders.....

Oh, so true about getting no reply to email from Thai companies.

I tried emailing one national Thai company twice - two weeks apart. No reply, Then I tried calling. First time I had the phone put down on me. Second attempt and eventually I got through to a more senior English speaking Thai.

He apologised for for the run-around. I pointed out a lack of information on their website regarding a product, He talked me through to find the page on the English version of the website. There was a .jpg with the information on it, but in Thai. I pointed that out to him and the error dawned on him. He said it would be changed. Two months later, the same photo in Thai was still there.

Electronic data?

Why not stick to the usual formula: X (pulled out of your @$$) + y (wishful thinking) + 200% increase (just because) = number of tourists! coffee1.gif

TAT "discovers" the 21st Century.

Another first for Thailand.

Electronic data to be made available to tourists from a central platform......is there going to be an internet capable computer "stationed" at Hualamphong then ?

Nonsense article.

Here is that word Gateway again sound familiar. In Thailand Gateway means to control manipulate spin. It may just ad a modem of truth into tourist numbers not the previous pick a number out of the air approach. I must say her picture looks better than the last one.

Ministry of tourism...

What were you expecting :)

Will it be in English too???

if its their usual standard there will be one word in english then all the rest in thai, this is the only difference between their thai and english pages. Given up trying to price anything and read up on the specs as it just doesnt exist if you dont read thai, dont know how many times I have ended up buying products from overseas due to this fact and that they will not answer emails querying anything you want to buy.Can see it now, pretty pics of the destinations for tourists and a big LOOK on top of the poster then all the names and directions in thai.........

I've got another idea for these brainiacs. Why not create a web site that people can use to post the videos they take when they visit Thailand. Then visitors could watch these videos online!

I need to patent this idea before someone else thinks of it.
