Treasury to mint commemorative coins highlighting King and elephants

BANGKOK: -- The Treasury Department says it will be issuing official souvenir coins under the theme "Thai Wildlife: Elephant, Thailand" featuring King Bhumibol and mother and baby elephants.

Three types of these commemorative coins will be produced and this will also be the first time that new Thai commemorative coins will be made simultaneously available to international and domestic collectors with planned first sales to begin in June of this year.

The Treasury Department of Thailand has joined force with the Royal Mint of England to produce these commemorative coins, highlighting Thai elephants. These coins are also an acknowledgement of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s conservation efforts for these revered animals.

His Majesty has long advocated a peaceful and harmonious existence between man and the elephants reflecting the long historical bonds between the Thai people and their beloved national animal.

The commemorative coins will be minted showcasing a mother elephant and her offspring and will be made in 3 types.

The first of these are coins minted in gold with a face value of 4,000 Baht. These coins will be minted from 99.9% gold and will individually weigh 31.21 grams each. They will be 32.69 mm in diameter and 1,000 of these coins will be produced.

The second type will also be minted from 99.9% gold but will weigh 7.8 grams each. The face value of 2,000 coins to be produced will be 2,000 baht and they will have a diameter of 22 mm.

The third type will be minted from silver with a face value of 200 baht each. They will be minted from 99.9% silver and will weigh 31.21 grams each. These silver coins will be 38.61 mm in diameter and 5,000 will be produced. All three types of coins will be made available to local and international collectors by June 2016.

With regards to the prices for each of the three types of coins, a final figure has yet to be finalized but experts speculate that domestic prices will be substantially lower than those of international markets. This is an unavoidable fact as international sales will require the assistance of dealers who will charge a fee.

Jakkrit Parapuntakul, the director-general of the Treasury Department, revealed that all three types of commemorative coins will be presented to international collectors at the World Money Fair 2016 which will be held from February 1-9 in Germany.

He stated that part of the reason these commemorative coins will be offered to international collectors is to attract possible foreign investment in the Thai coinage industry.

Trying to make reasonable & intelligent comments about a revered man and revered elephants will be next to impossible given present circumstances..

I would love to give you a thumbs up but I'm not using a VPN.

Will gold mined or panned in Thailand be used in the coin? Making the coin a true treasure and investment.

Only a thousand made at an oz will sell very quickly,

Sell them at face value, I will take the lot!

i think the artist need re-educating sad.png

only a few 1000 of the Gold? ordinary people will have no chance unless they do a lottery type sale

And why are you of that opinion, something about the images? Do tell.

You'd be better off buying US Gold Eagle 1 ounce coins, which have a face value of $50, far less than 4,000 THB.

I think this Thai coin has a great design.

Only worries I see will be counterfeiting gone berserk in Chinatown.

Sure, I can take some eagles. You selling?

But, I don't see any information on where one might purchase the medals.

Maybe change the elephant side to having one foot poised over a prone man ?

Given the state of Elephant rides and animal cruelty, deaths on Elephant rides, cheap untrained Burmese labor , then I think not only the artist but the ideas department need to take a look at themselves.
