BANGKOK: -- The government and concerned agencies are now speeding up the housing scheme for low-income people with some 3,400 housing units expected to be built within two years.

Treasury Department director-general Jakkrit Parapuntakul told reporters that he has met with representatives from the public and private sectors to review progress of the affordable housing scheme.

He said concerned parties are still discussing the construction plan, noting that housing units will be built on the surplus plot of lands owned by the government.

He said construction of the housing units should take one year and 3,400 units should be built and ready for sale in 2017.

According to Mr Jakkrit, prices of housing units should range from 500,000 baht to 700,000 baht. Housing units outside Bangkok should price at 500,000 baht per unit while condominiums in Bangkok will be sold at 700,000 baht per unit.

He said six plots of land have been considered for the scheme, including a piece of land on Soi Wat Phai Tan in Samsen Nai area, a land near the Royal Thai Mint Bureau and two plots of land in Cha-Am district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

He said the government has not concluded on the income level of people who should be eligible to purchase the house.

It is now looking at people with income level of between 15,000 baht and 24,000 baht per month, he noted.

Instant slums i'm affraid

Who will maintain the recreation areas and the swimming pools?

They are looking at incomes between 15.000-24.000 baht !!!!!

A hell of a lot of Thais would be happy earning that.

15.000-24.000 baht? low incomes??? 15000 Bht is a Thai teacher/government worker/Policemans basic salary... Hardly low income by Thai standards.....

So my gf not qualify. She works hard in office and gets all of 10k a month.

It is accepted by many that you should not spend more than 25% of income on house payment, utilities, upkeep, etc. It would appear that it will take 2 salaries to afford these houses, so they do not become slums.

There will be enough to shelter 3400 families, unless they pack them in like sardines in a tin. That will not cover the homeless if some

groups numbers are used, just for Bangkok proper itself. Its a start, but a long way to go to make a dent in what is needed. Then add the numbers moving to the big city yearly and they will be losing ground before they start.
